Reset your Refrigerator Filter Indicator Light
Most people are not aware that after you change your refrigerator water filter, there are two additional steps that should be taken to properly complete the water filter change.
Step 1: Reset your refrigerator water filter change light
Most new refrigerators now come equipped with an indicator light that notifies you when it is time to change your water filter. This light does not automatically reset when you change your water filter and the light must be manually reset.
Here is a list of refrigerator manufacturers and how to reset the filter change indicator light:
Amana- Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
Frigidaire- Press and Hold the Reset Button Until the Indicator Light Flashes.
GE General Electric- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
HotPoint- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
Jenn-Air- Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Kitchen Aid- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.
Maytag- Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Samsung- Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.
Whirlpool- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.
Step 2: Flush a couple of gallons of water through your new filter
Since refrigerator water filters are made of carbon, some carbon residue is present in the first gallon or two of water. This will not harm you but may leave a bitter taste and residue in your water. If you continue to have these problems after flushing a couple of gallons through the filter, it is possible that you have a defective water filter.
Once these two steps are completed, you are all set to enjoy great tasting ice and water through your refrigerator. If you don’t see your manufacturer listed or the instructions don’t work for your model please post a comment with your make and model number so that we can provide exact instructions for your model.

Has anyone got a recycle solution for used filter units? (I have a Fridgidair side by side, although Im not sure that would make a difference). I feel bad throwing such a big lump of badness into landfill every few months?
Thanks
NIcky
I have a Kenmore side by side refrigerator. We replaced the filter, and reset the light (it flashed different colors and then green) It stays green for a little while, and then goes back to red. What could the trouble be? We inherited this when we moved into our house.
We purchased a Kenmore side by side less than 2 years ago and have since replaced the water filter 3 times because of the taste of the water and ice cubes. Each filter has the same end result even after dumping a gallon of water and the ice cubes and resetting. What else could be the problem? The filter that came with the fridge didn’t seem to have this problem, but the remaining 3 filters purchased at the same time have. Thanks.
Thanks.
What happens if you don’t change your filter?
I have a 4 year old Kenmore side by side with water and ice maker. I changed the filter but no water goes out nor does it make ice.
I have an AMANA ARS2664BB
I found that to reset the filter light you have to press and hold the LOCK button and the WATER button at the same time.
This will reset the filter light to GREEN.
I have a Kitchen Aid side by side. Replaced the filter but can’t reset light inside. Held down the lock button – filter light is flashing but won’t reset.?????
I have a whirlpool side by side that takes whirlpool ultra ease filter the filter is in the front grill panel I am ordering one but how do I get the old one out?
I have a 26′ Side By Side Kenmore ref. #596.51679100. Want to change water filter. Where can I find it? Help?
I also have a Whirlpool side-by-side. tried your press 5x solution and it did not work – I have no LED light at all?? Help please
When changing the water filter under the fridge the plastic ‘yolk’ type handle snapped off and now the old filter is jammed in there and there’s nothing to grip onto to turn it. It’s always been tight but this time it was stuck solid. I tried pouring soapy water down the retaining housing while covering the weep hole underneath and turning the canister with some long nose pliers but those two o-ring seals at the unreachable end won’t budge. There’s not much to grip onto and I’m thinking of drilling a couple of holes in the filter end to get a better purchase on it but not knowing the inner design of the filter and wall thickness I don’t know if this would be a bad idea. Is there an easy fix-in-place solution or do I have to replace the whole cartidge assembly? Thanks.
I have a Kenmore side by side refrigerator model #

I need to change the water filter and can’t find the manual, what are the steps for this action.
The in grill knob doesn’t turn.
What minerals are necessary in water for good taste? Will filters remove these minerals?
Hi. I have a Maytag side by side refrigerator, and it’s time to change the filter, because its light is on. However, I don’t know how to take that filter out. It sticks. Further, my husband says that we must be careful, because there are two tubes of water connected to it. The Maytag people, who delivered this ‘frig did not leave us any manual, and I can’t find its manual online. When I phoned the Maytag store, they asked me, “Don’t you have a manual?”
We woke up to water all over our hardwood floor. The water is apparently coming from the filter connection in our Kenmore side-by-side. We pulled out the filter and the leak stopped. When we put the filter in, the water sprays out the front. Is this a filter problem or do we need to buy a new fridge?
why do we need a filter for the refrigerator ice despensers, my husband and I were talking and he said its the same water from the faucet and I said it cant be because why would you need a filter, running the water through the line, please answer this question, i say some where the water change coming through and it would not be safe for us to drink without the filter, help who won the arguement
Hi! Just moved into a new house and inherited a Sears Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator (model begins with 596 so it’s an Amana, right???).
Water and ice dispenser worked great until I hit the lock button to prevent the kids from playing with it. Now I cannot unlock it!
I’ve read all the posts above and tried everything, including unplugging it for 5 minutes.
Help!
Also, previous owners never reset the RED filter light.
There is a whitish residue on the tray below the filtered water and ice in my Kitchenaid refrigerator. This started when I changed the filter for the first time. Is that normal or is there problem with the filter or the way I installed it? Thanks.
Thanks! This site is awesome. The light was bugging me for months, and all I had to do was check out this site.
I need to know how to remove the filter in the base of a kenmore side by side refrigerator. It doesn’t seem like it wants to turn?
I just reset my filter light but now my lights are all off Kenmore 596.51673100 Thanks for any help

I replaced my water filter on a Maytag MZD2665HEW 26″ side x side.

I have a Kenmore Limited Edition side-by-side model no.596.51674100, and I have reset the light pressing and holding the lock and water buttons until the indicator turned green…. Hope it helps.
Hi there! Thanks a lot for the information regarding my Samsung fridge! I couldn’t find the information on Samsungs site, så thank God for the internet and clever users of this!!!
Take care!

I followed the above steps for changing the water filter in my Amana Refrigerator. I reset the lights however when I do that it turns all the lights off and they don’t come back on unless I reset it again and then it says the filter needs to be replaced still. Model #ARS2664BB
Amana ARSE665 filter state indicator LED reset: Press and hold dispenser lock (far left) together with the water select button (next to left). The filter light will change from red to green. Some have mentioned pressing and holding the dispensor lock together with the auto/light button — this disables the panel altogether. Repeating the combination reenables the panel.
I have a Whirlpool side-by-side with a water filter. About two weeks after we bought it, the water started tasting funny (almost like dirt) so I replaced the filter. Three days later the water tasted bad again. This is a new water line from the supply under the sink. The water from the sink tastes fine. Any ideas?
I am also interested in an answer to this question posted above by Karen:
“This is sort of a follow up question. I want to know how refrigerators know when it is time to change the filter. Is it just set to notify you every year or is it actually linked to the condition of the filter and once the filter gets to a certain threshhold the light comes on, whether that be in 6 months or 2 years. The reason I ask is that I am single and so I don’t use the water as much as would be the case in a normal family. I want to know if when the light comes on, is it because the filter is actually worn out/dirty or is it just because a preset timer has expired. I feel like I have to keep shelling out 50 bucks every time the red light is on while the filter I am throwing out still may have a lot of life left in it. Hopefully you get my drift. Thanks”
My side by side fridgidare fridge freezer is 4 years old. The drinking water will not come out, it leaks into the fridge through the filter. I have changed the cartridge and set the reset button. I had a repair person come out only to be told he didn’t know why it was leaking through the filter into the fridge.
I have a whirlpool fridge (side by side) model ED25RFXFB01. The water dispenser stooped delivering water while there is still water coming to the ice maker. I changed the filter but the problem is still there. A friend suggested to change the water inlet valve and I am still running in the smae problem. I appreciate any suggestion.

2 years ago i ordered filters onm to1-ds my account number then was 0226886382 i want to make sure i am ordering the right ones, i saw a to1 on your inventory is that the right one please reply
Model # 596.51679100 Kenmore Limited Edition side by side is made by Amana so use the Amana instructions lised above. Let us know if they do not work for you.
Any time you do not use your water dispenser for a few weeks it is recommended that you change the filter. It is possible for bacteria to grow in the filter media if not used on a regular basis and bacteria was introduced to the filter prior to it not being used.
We bought a refrigerator from a neighbor, who gave us her filter because it was only 3 weeks old. We forgot to flush the line (which probably hadn’t been used for 3 years). Perhaps two months later, we flushed the line. Do you think the filter is still good? I was diagnosed with giardia. Could that be from the saturated filter which is not nearly 6 months old but possibly full of contaminants? And the fridge is a Whirlpool, but the filter is Kenmore. Does that matter?
Im trying to reset my filter light on my Amana fridge. The filter light never flashes when I press the auto and lock buttons. it will turn all the indicater lights off. so if the water is selected the green light is not lit up. if I do it again the filter light comes back on and then the green light comes on above the water button.
If you are having problems with your reset light, please post your refrigerator model number so we can lookup your models reset instructions.
Whirlpool side by side fridge, same problem as S K HONG &
GREGG posted in June and August this year.
The Red lign indicator is always on after replacing the filter and pressing the resetting
button 5 times.
Is this a fault in the fridge ?
I installed a new filter and reset the indicator button for a new filter on my GE fridge, but no water comes out. It goes into the filter, but won’t come out of the front of the fridge. I replaced the filter because no water came out of the filter.
Model # 596.51679100 Kenmore Limited Edition side by side. Cannot seem to reset the filter change light. Any suggestions?

I have an Amana bottom freezer model equipped with an inside water filter. I changed the filter and the system worked normally for about 2 weeks. Now the water coming out only comes out in a trickle. What could the problem be? Thank you.
I’m with S.K. Hong above. I press the light button 5 times quickly as it says in the Whirlpool instructions, but the light stays red.
I have a Kenmore side by side with filter at the base of the refrig. Directions say to push button and pull out old filter. Old filter will not budge!!! Do you know any tricks to get the old filter out??
The GE inline water filter model GXRQ has been changed twice and still the icemakere has a storng smell of rotten eggs. Removing the filter stops the stench. The icemaker has been changed as have the lines and the water valve.
I have a Whirlpoo side by side refrigerator model with ice dispensing system and ultraease II water filtratio. system. I put in the filter for my 6 months old whirlpool yesterday. I pressed and release the Light Button 5 times quickly (in 10 seconds). It still stays red. How long you have to wait for the light button to turn green.
I installed and reset the indicator button for a new filter on my GE fridge, but no water comes out. It goes into the filter, but won’t come out of the front of the fridge
My Amana is about 4 years old. I have to press and hold water and dispenser lock buttons until the filter status indicator light flashes to reset.
The model that you listed will reset with either the Maytag or Amana directions.
Maytag Refrigerators – Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Amana Refrigerators – Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
Please let us know which one works.
For future reference, the filter that you model uses can be found at http://www.filtersfast.com/WF50-UKF8001AXX-12589208-PuirClean-Water-Filter.asp.
