Reset your Refrigerator Filter Indicator Light

Most people are not aware that after you change your refrigerator water filter, there are two additional steps that should be taken to properly complete the water filter change.

Step 1: Reset your refrigerator water filter change light

Most new refrigerators now come equipped with an indicator light that notifies you when it is time to change your water filter. This light does not automatically reset when you change your water filter and the light must be manually reset.

Here is a list of refrigerator manufacturers and how to reset the filter change indicator light:

Amana- Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
Frigidaire- Press and Hold the Reset Button Until the Indicator Light Flashes.
GE General Electric- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
HotPoint- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
Jenn-Air- Press and Hold The Water and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Kitchen Aid- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.
Maytag- Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Samsung- Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.
Whirlpool- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.

Step 2: Flush a couple of gallons of water through your new filter

Since refrigerator water filters are made of carbon, some carbon residue is present in the first gallon or two of water. This will not harm you but may leave a bitter taste and residue in your water. If you continue to have these problems after flushing a couple of gallons through the filter, it is possible that you have a defective water filter.

Once these two steps are completed, you are all set to enjoy great tasting ice and water through your refrigerator. If you don’t see your manufacturer listed or the instructions don’t work for your model please post a comment with your make and model number so that we can provide exact instructions for your model.

  1. I replaced the filter and flushed it & that is fine on my Whirlpool Side-by-side but the indicator light will not reset – it is stick on the red/orange. I have tried pushing the button 5 times on 10 seconds to reset the indicator back to green and it will not work – is there any other way to reset this?

  2. After 14 days of the Water Filter Status light being at the ‘Replace Filter’ stage, the “Replace Filter” and “water” icons will glow at all times and blink continuously
during dispensing. Also, an alert chime will sound three times following dispensing. So, it seems that you will need to reset the status system again.

Reset Water Filter Status by Pressing the OPTIONS button to enter Options mode, then press LOCK to initiate the reset, then press MEASURED FILL to confirm that you
want to reset the status light. When the system is reset, the “ORDER” and “REPLACE” icons will disappear from the display screen.

  3. i have maytag model # mfx2570aeb3
i think i have reset the filter indicator but unable to get water or ice – makes a different warning beep when you hit the dispense button

  4. Unfortunately, there is not a way to change the timer setting. These do not measure the water quality. Being that you already have a filter removing the chlorine, you may not need the extra filtration unless you want to keep the extra filtration step. If you want to change every 12 months, you can reset the light to green and change every other light reset. Hope that helps Ken!

  5. We replaced our 15 year old refrigerator in May 2013, with a Whirlpool Model WRF560SEYM. We have a significant “Watersoft” activated carbon filter for our house water system, which is replaced annually, at considerable expense. This system worked fine for our old refrigerator (the motor required replacing, which is why it was replaced). The water/ice was good tasting and clear all the time.
With this new Whirlpool refrigerator we notice that the Water Filter requires replacing every six months. That is an added expense to an already significant household activated carbon filter system. To my mind, for our household specifically, this refrigerator water filter being replaced every six months seems superfluous.
Given our specific household water system, can the above Whirlpool model have the water filter replacement light re-programmed for say every nine or even twelve months? If so, how does one do that?

  6. Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. If this does not work, refer to your owners manual for troubleshooting instructions.

  7. Press the OPTIONS button to enter Options mode, then press LOCK to
initiate the reset, then press MEASURED FILL to confirm that
you want to reset the status light. When the system is reset,
the “ORDER” and “REPLACE” icons will disappear from the
    display screen.

  8. To reset the water filter indicator on most models, press and hold the filter button for 3-5 seconds. Refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on resetting the water filter indicator. If you have the model number of the refrigerator, we can assist in locating instructions.
