Reset your Refrigerator Filter Indicator Light

Most people are not aware that after you change your refrigerator water filter, there are two additional steps that should be taken to properly complete the water filter change.

Step 1: Reset your refrigerator water filter change light

Most new refrigerators now come equipped with an indicator light that notifies you when it is time to change your water filter. This light does not automatically reset when you change your water filter and the light must be manually reset.

Here is a list of refrigerator manufacturers and how to reset the filter change indicator light:

Amana- Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
Frigidaire- Press and Hold the Reset Button Until the Indicator Light Flashes.
GE General Electric- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
HotPoint- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
Jenn-Air- Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Kitchen Aid- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.
Maytag- Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Samsung- Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.
Whirlpool- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.

Step 2: Flush a couple of gallons of water through your new filter

Since refrigerator water filters are made of carbon, some carbon residue is present in the first gallon or two of water. This will not harm you but may leave a bitter taste and residue in your water. If you continue to have these problems after flushing a couple of gallons through the filter, it is possible that you have a defective water filter.

Once these two steps are completed, you are all set to enjoy great tasting ice and water through your refrigerator. If you don’t see your manufacturer listed or the instructions don’t work for your model please post a comment with your make and model number so that we can provide exact instructions for your model.

On the Whilrpool, I have pressed and held the RESET BUTTON several times, for a very long time. I also unplugged the unit for a couple of minutes to see if that would work. Got any other self help things I can do before I throw in the towel and call a repairman?

The filter is full of air and can take several seconds to push all of the air through the filter and out of the dispenser. Be sure that the filter is inserted all of the way into the despenser before turning and make sure that the filter is turned all of the way without forcing the filter.

I have not heard many issues with this type of filter. If the old filter was working, and now it does not work, it sounds like the receiver that the filter screws into could be bad and may need to be replaced.

After replacing the water filter (UKF8001 For your model number), you must reset the water filter status to turn off the message.

    1. On main menu, press the touch pad next to “Options.”
    2. In each of the following screens, continue to press the touch
pad next to “More Options” until you reach the “Replace Filter
    screen.”
    3. Press the touch pad next to “YES” to reset the water filter
status. Press the touch pad next to “NO” if you do not wish to
    reset the water filter status.

After changing the filter, reset the filter status light by pressing and holding the reset button located on the water and ice despenser. The status light will change from red to green when the system is reset.

I just replaced the water filter in my samsung fridge model rs261mdrs. Somehow the water would not flow. I replaced the brand new filter with the old filter with the same result: No water! I removed the filter altogether and depressed the water lever voila, water! I tried pushing the different buttons, ie “ice type” & “child lock” for 3 seconds, twice, to no avail! It seems like the filter is not opening the water line, because without the filter, water flows.
    Thanks a lot and BR,

Hi Debbie, this sounds like a timing issue. Depending on your refrigerator model, you may have to reset it a couple of times in order for the light to switch to the correct color indicator. We received a few concerns like yours with customers who have side by side refrigerators. Sometimes this also occurs when the filter has been in the refrigerator longer than recommended. Hope this helps! Thanks!

I have had nothing but problems with my whirlpool side by side, i too had a muk floating our of the filter and then when i ran the water floating in the water. Called whirlpool …. nothing, but that isn’t anything new, because whirlpool dances around every question you present to them. My question is why does or did my filter light stay on in green mode after I took out the filter, my water completely stopped running, and after process of elimination, it was the filter that needed replaced. But while waiting for the filter to arrive, the green light was still shining bright at the top of my refrigerator side where you have to reset it…
That is alarming to me ? any ideas

I have a whirlpool side by side. I couldn’t get the indicator light to reset after replacing the filter. I unplugged the refrigerator, waited about 30 seconds and plugged it back in. The light was green. I went through the steps to reset it anyway, and it blinked red a few times and then turned green again. It seems to be working, now.

    Hi Faye,

We checked with our Certified Water Specialist and he recommended the following:
You want to be sure that you are trying to remove your water filter in the correct direction and not accidentally trying to tighten it. Avoid using any wrenches, because that could break your receiver. A simple rule to follow is “Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty!” If you find that you continue to have difficulty, you may need to consult with a repair man so that you will not have a mishap occur that could create a costly repair. Hope this helps and all the best! Thanks for your inquiry.

We have a Kenmore side-by-side and when we replaced the filter, the water still did not work. We were opening the fridge door to see if maybe the coils of tubing that hold the water were frozen, and the new filter unit SHOT out of the compartment like a missile and gave me a huge goose egg on the head. What are we doing wrong here? Why is there so much pressure built up in the filter unit?

    Hey Danny,

You’re not the first to have that red light stay on when changing your Whirlpool fridge filter. Something that has worked with others in the past is to hold down the reset button for a good period of time. Depending on your model, it may beep. Once you hear the beep, then try pressing the reset button five times quickly.

I hope this works; let us know if it doesn’t and we’ll see what else we can come up with.

    Thanks,

    Daniel

    Hello Lloyd,

I found the following information on Samsung’s site. Can you try this and let me know if it works?

The water filter indicator light is designed to turn orange after five months or 450 gallons, and red after six months or 500 gallons.
To reset the water filter indicator so that the indicator turns green, follow these steps:

1.Press the Ice Type Button and Child Lock Button simultaneously for 3 seconds. Note: Hold the buttons for only 3 seconds. If you press these 2 buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds, the reset function ceases.

1.Release the buttons and repeat the same step one more time. The water filter indicator light should turn green.
Note: Does not apply to RFG299 model.

For 2010 SIde By SIde models, press and hold the WATER button on the display panel

I have a Maytag side by side refrigerator and a brita water filter. The water filter keeps freezing which means no water or ice coming out of the dispenser. We have to keep taking the filter out and thawing it in water. This time I left it out all night thinking it would be thawed by morning… but I believe more than the filter freezes, cuz it still does not work. If I turn down the temp in the fridge, the food isn’t cold. If I turn down the temp of the freezer the food thaws. Help! Thank you, Kathy

    Hello Eric,
As I’m sure you’ve already discovered, there’s not a wealth of info online about your particular fridge and the filter.
I did find this owner’s manual, though it doesn’t really give any specific details about the location of the water filter or how to change it. http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200706/20070626065918031_DA99-00810A_v0.6.pdf
As to its location, most newer refrigerators have the filters in or below the freezer compartment, or even in the fresh food sections.
Some refrigerators, however, have an “inline” water filter plumbed into the tubing running to the refrigerator. This would be located behind the unit. Other times you can find the filter in the base grill of your unit.
Poke around a bit and see if you can find anything. Your old filter might have a model number on it, which would be very helpful (we carry one popular Samsung filter, which you can view here: http://www.filtersfast.com/Samsung-DA29-00003A-refrigerator-water-filter.asp.
It doesn’t seem like this will fit your model, but perhaps it will give you a better idea as to what to look for. An inline filter, on the other hand, would look something like this: http://www.filtersfast.com/IF-35-Waterpik-water-filters.asp
    We’ll get this figured out!

I have a Samsung SRS758DP two door fridge freezer. The water has stopped dispensing and the filter light is on. Can you tell me how I change the filter and where it is situated as I do not have a manual.

  34. 34

    Hello Kimberly,
It sounds like you could have one of two problems.
It could be that scale has built up in your pipes and is now coming through your refrigerator filter. Refrigerator filters will usually stop particles this large, even though their main purpose is to reduce the taste and odor of chlorine.
The other problem is that you might have gotten a bad filter, and pieces of the media are coming through. This is perhaps less likely.
To see if it is a result of your new filter, you may try taking the filter out and running the water without it. Some fridges will not allow you to do this without a dummy filter.
Let us know if that helps at all.

I have a Kenmore Side by Side model
10654383380. After changing the filter, the water has stuff floating in it that looks like wet tissue paper, only small in size.
We have run through 3 or 4 gallons and still getting this gross stuff in the water.
Also, how do I reset the reminder light?
    Thanks.

    One more thing, Becky.
You might want to try giving Maytag a call, if you haven’t. They might have some information that is more specific to your model. Here’s a site that will show you how to find your model number, which Maytag may need.
    http://www.maytag.com/support/model_number_popup.jsp?type=refrigerator&Image1.x=16&Image1.y=11

  37. 37

    Hey Becky,
I assume you already tried pressing the light and lock buttons until the water light flashes?
On some models you can also try rapidly pressing those buttons. Sometimes that helps.
    I’ll keep digging.

If you’re having problems thinking the filter is stuck…did you take the grille off? On my Whirlpool side-by-side, it’s attached with 2 clips, one just inside each hinge. Pull gently from on the part outside/below the hinges. Once you have the grille off, the filter should turn easily. And you can clean things out while you’ve got them apart. Slide the cover off the end of the old filter and onto the new one. BTW – my old filter leaked a bit, so you may want to have a towel on the floor.

    I have a Kenmore refrigerator model 106.74982401
I am trying to replace the water filter. I put the new one in but it will not turn. The old one will not turn either. I have always found it difficult but now it is impossible to turn. When I had the old filter in the refrigerator, the light which tells you when it is time to change the filter went from yellow to green and stayed green for a long time, telling me that it probable was not in place. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I checked and I have the correct filter for my model of refrigerator.

I have a whirlpool side by side refrigerator. I am not able to remove my water filter. I tried several times. I cannot turn it any ways. I have replaced my water filter few times in the past in the same refrigerator without any problem. But this time, i am not able to remove my filter at all. What can i do?
Couple months back, the faucet from the wall that connects to the rear of my refrigerator started dripping water and i replaced the washer and the water dripping from the faucet stopped. I am not sure if the dripped water could have damaged anything so the water filter is not coming out. It is really hard to believe. I do not believe so but would like to include it here. Our water has a lot of rust. Is it possible the filter got rust and i am not able to remove because of that?

I have a Whirlpool side by side. Upon changing the filter and running the requisite 2-3 gallons, I noticed what appears to be small pieces of fine plastic sheeting floating in the water. Any thoughts? Is my hose leading from the filter to the door discharge coming apart and in need of replacement? Please reply.
