Reset your Refrigerator Filter Indicator Light

Most people are not aware that after you change your refrigerator water filter, there are two additional steps that should be taken to properly complete the water filter change.

Step 1: Reset your refrigerator water filter change light

Most new refrigerators now come equipped with an indicator light that notifies you when it is time to change your water filter. This light does not automatically reset when you change your water filter and the light must be manually reset.

Here is a list of refrigerator manufacturers and how to reset the filter change indicator light:

Amana- Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
Frigidaire- Press and Hold the Reset Button Until the Indicator Light Flashes.
GE General Electric- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
HotPoint- Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
Jenn-Air- Press and Hold The Water and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Kitchen Aid- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.
Maytag- Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Samsung- Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.
Whirlpool- Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.

Step 2: Flush a couple of gallons of water through your new filter

Since refrigerator water filters are made of carbon, some carbon residue is present in the first gallon or two of water. This will not harm you but may leave a bitter taste and residue in your water. If you continue to have these problems after flushing a couple of gallons through the filter, it is possible that you have a defective water filter.

Once these two steps are completed, you are all set to enjoy great tasting ice and water through your refrigerator. If you don’t see your manufacturer listed or the instructions don’t work for your model please post a comment with your make and model number so that we can provide exact instructions for your model.

  2. I have a Fridgidaire Professional series refidgerator. The amber light for water filter system came on and then after a week or so it turned back green. Is this normal?

  3. I replaced my water filter on a Maytag MZD2665HEW 26″ side x side.
The filter light changed to green but the lock is still on. I just bought this from someone who did not have a manual. please advise on how to unlock. Thanks-james

  4. I have a Kenmore Limited Edition side-by-side model no.596.51674100, and I have reset the light pressing and holding the lock and water buttons until the indicator turned green…. Hope it helps.

  5. Hi there! Thanks a lot for the information regarding my Samsung fridge! I couldn’t find the information on Samsungs site, så thank God for the internet and clever users of this!!!
    Take care!

  6. I followed the above steps for changing the water filter in my Amana Refrigerator. I reset the lights however when I do that it turns all the lights off and they don’t come back on unless I reset it again and then it says the filter needs to be replaced still. Model #ARS2664BB

  7. Amana ARSE665 filter state indicator LED reset: Press and hold dispenser lock (far left) together with the water select button (next to left). The filter light will change from red to green. Some have mentioned pressing and holding the dispensor lock together with the auto/light button — this disables the panel altogether. Repeating the combination reenables the panel.

  8. I have a Whirlpool side-by-side with a water filter. About two weeks after we bought it, the water started tasting funny (almost like dirt) so I replaced the filter. Three days later the water tasted bad again. This is a new water line from the supply under the sink. The water from the sink tastes fine. Any ideas?

  9. I am also interested in an answer to this question posted above by Karen:
“This is sort of a follow up question. I want to know how refrigerators know when it is time to change the filter. Is it just set to notify you every year or is it actually linked to the condition of the filter and once the filter gets to a certain threshhold the light comes on, whether that be in 6 months or 2 years. The reason I ask is that I am single and so I don’t use the water as much as would be the case in a normal family. I want to know if when the light comes on, is it because the filter is actually worn out/dirty or is it just because a preset timer has expired. I feel like I have to keep shelling out 50 bucks every time the red light is on while the filter I am throwing out still may have a lot of life left in it. Hopefully you get my drift. Thanks”

  10. My side by side fridgidare fridge freezer is 4 years old. The drinking water will not come out, it leaks into the fridge through the filter. I have changed the cartridge and set the reset button. I had a repair person come out only to be told he didn’t know why it was leaking through the filter into the fridge.
