Commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is an annual health campaign organized by breast cancer charities to increase awareness for the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure. Every year, an estimated 40,000 women in the United States die from this disease.

Although the general assumption is that only women suffer from breast cancer, men can be at risk as well. Every year, more than 2,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed among men. As with female breast bancer, the risk for contracting this disease increases with age.

The best way to fight breast cancer is to detect it in its early stages, most often done with a mammogram. Women and men should not ignore any breast lumps or swelling and should frequently see their doctor. It is recommended that all women age 50 years or older have routine mammograms performed.

In 2011, there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. At Filters Fast we want to increase breast cancer awareness and advocacy by urging everyone, especially those at high risk, to monitor their bodies for early detection and treatment. We invite you to feel free to share your sentiments, pay tribute to or write “in memory of” someone you lost to breast cancer in the comment section of this blog.

While Breast Cancer Awareness Month only lasts for 31 days, it is important to frequently raise awareness and educate ourselves about this disease. Do not neglect to have a routine mammogram performed. Above all else, always keep in mind to continue fighting and never lose hope.
