Students Donate Miles in the W3 Project World Water Day Challenge

Indian Trail Students Donate Their Miles To Save Lives!

The enthusiasm in the eyes of children when they contribute and accomplish something to help thousands of people around the world, is a sight that will bring you to your humble knees. Many of the students at Indian Trail Elementary School in Indian Trail, North Carolina participated in The W3 Project World Water Day Challenge, in their quest to donate each mile they walked for this special project.

Watching the look of anticipation on the faces of each one of these children, literally brings tears to your eyes. They represented diverse ethnicities, genders, personalities and socio-economic backgrounds, which meant absolutely nothing when it came down to walking for a worthy cause.

Upon completion of walking for the W3 Project, students were awarded certificates and a special bag of goodies for their hard work and dedication by donating their miles to provide clean drinking water to at least one person for an entire year. 3M Filtrete made a generous donation to Indian Trail Elementary School and sponsored every mile that each student walked. The W3 Project includes the partnerships of Filtersfast.com, Wine to Water and TrekDesk. Together, they are building a community of humanitarians walking in the pursuit of health and wellness for everyone.

It’s amazing how these children understood the concept that 1 mile = 1 year of clean drinking water for 1 person, while bringing attention to the obesity problem we face in our society. We want to thank the following people from Indian Trail Elementary School who were instrumental in making this project a remarkable success:

Candice Boatright, Principal

Allison Audet, P.E. Teacher

Jenna Mayhew, PTO President

Teachers: Ms. Feinstein, Ms. Baker, Ms. Dixon, Ms. Landers, Ms. Reese, Ms. Rochfort, Ms. Yalich and Ms. Hamilton

Kelly Ransbottom, Bookkeeper

We would like to again thank 3M Filtrete for their sponsorship and to all of the students who unselfishly donated their miles for such a worthy cause, thank you for a job well done! To the parents and guardians of these students, thank you so much for supporting them. See you next year!

Each year, the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, sponsors an Earth Day Environmental Festival on campus. This is an educational-packed day with representation from various sectors of the college and commercial communities, falling within the categories of sustainability, waste management, environmental awareness and global water issues.

Subsidiaries from Filters Fast LLC, FiltersFast.com and Filters Fast Local Service, exhibited and shared information about water testing, the cost effectiveness of using water hydration stations, eliminating the waste of plastic water bottles that pollute highways and landfills, along with increasing awareness of the global water crisis through our W3 Project with TrekDesk and Wine to Water.

We were deeply touched and literally brought to tears during a conversation by a young lady who is a student attending UNCC. Her name is Anna and she is from Africa. As we discussed our commitment to increase awareness about the global water crisis with our W3 Project, she painted a very real picture of personally experiencing such challenges. This was a very emotional dialogue, but nevertheless, one that touched our hearts and injected us with greater momentum to do everything we can to eradicate our global water crisis and save millions of lives from drinking contaminated water. So often it takes a heart-wrenching story like hers to make us really appreciate how fortunate we are.

Students, administrators and staff from the university strongly represented the turnout for this 20th Annual Earth Day event. We want to thank Devin Hatley, Environmental Educator for the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling, for inviting Filters Fast to participate in this important community event. The Earth Day Environmental Festival is a free event that is also open to the public. UNCC students volunteered to assist with this event which was held at the CHHS Plaza across from the Student Union.

With an event like the annual UNCC Earth Day event, we are inspired to continue protecting our environment by taking action to learn, teach and share our knowledge with others. Our hats off to the UNCC Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling for a successful event. Keep up the good work by helping to increase our social consciousness to save our environment!

World Water Day Kickoff with Indian Trail Elementary School

Today we are celebrating World Water Day. World Water Day is an internationally recognized day that is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), the first World Water Day was designated on March 22, 1993. Each year this day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater.

In recognition of World Water Day, FiltersFast.com, Filters Fast Local Service and the W3 Project is teaming with Indian Trail Elementary School in Indian Trail, North Carolina for a month-long celebration of walking for water. Beginning today and ending on April 22, 2012 which is Earth Day, the 800 member student body at Indian Trail Elementary School is challenged to walk as many miles as they can in this 1-month time-frame and donate the miles they run or walk to the W3 Project. The W3 Project is a partnership that includes FiltersFast.com, TrekDesk and Wine To Water. Together, the W3 partners are building a community of people who walk in pursuit of health and wellness for everyone. By raising awareness about health and the global water crisis, W3 is giving everyone the ability to either “Donate” or “Sponsor” miles in which 100% of all proceeds go to Wine To Water.

This video was especially produced to educate and increase the awareness about the global water crisis for elementary and middle schools, which is used as a template for other schools who want to implement the same type of event at their school. 3M Filtrete, a leader in home filtration systems is sponsoring up to 3,000 miles of the total miles that the students walk at Indian Trail Elementary for their month long initiative. Thank you 3M Filtrete for becoming an important sponsor for Indian Trail Elementary School that will certainly help the school, community and deliver the message about the importance of filtration while helping others in the United States and abroad obtain access to clean drinking water.

Who Needs a Leprechaun for These St. Patrick’s Day Lucky Charms?

Each year on March 17, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Did you know that the original color associated with St. Patrick was blue? The color blue is often connected to depth and stability, but also symbolizes trust, faith, loyalty, wisdom and truth. As early as the 17th century, however, the color green was worn in celebration of this day. Green is also symbolic of balance, life, nature, fertility, health, good luck, tranquility, well-being and even jealousy.

For over 1,000 years, the Irish observed St. Patrick’s Day as a religious holiday, although it is steeped with deep-rooted folklore. From shamrocks to leprechauns sitting on a pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in the United States and abroad with Irish inspired feasts, parades and gallantly wearing many hues of green. To commemorate this lucky day and the arrival of spring, we decided to share some of our all time favorite green items that do not require a 4-leaf clover for good luck.

Water Filtration Pitchers: Green Brita Grand Water Filter Pitcher and the Green Elemaris XL Water Filtration Pitcher.

Reusable Water Bottles:  Be Green Klean Kanteen 27 oz Bottle & Loop Cap, Green Vapur Anti Bottle Water Bottle and KOR Delta Sawgrass Green Water Bottle.

Humidifiers: Green Crane EE-5301 Cool Mist Humidifier and Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Frog Humidifier.

Ireland is known for its lush green landscape and is thus named the Emerald Isle. Is it really true that if you do not wear green on St. Patrick’s Day you will get pinched by a leprechaun? Moreover, what about the “Fighting Irish” of Notre Dame? Will they wear green on St. Patrick’s Day or are they immune to the pinches by the legendary leprechauns?

Going Green By Recycling Water Filters for World Water Day

St. Patrick’s Day is not the only reason why we’re celebrating “Going Green.” With Spring announcing its arrival next week and World Water Day falling on March 22, the call to action for being good stewards of our environment is more urgent than ever. If we don’t take care of our environment, our environment will definitely turn on us. We are paying homage to the value of going green as it relates to water. It comes as no surprise that the birthstone for March is an Aquamarine. This pale blue gemstone whose name originates from the Roman word “Aqua” meaning water and “Mare” meaning sea resembles the color of seawater.

For decades, we have grown familiar with the term “Going Green.” It is a ubiquitous statement that defines our worldwide ecosystem and the lives of humans and animal life everywhere. Around the world people, businesses and charities are making great strides by building communities to raise awareness about caring for and nurturing our neighbors and our planet.

As we prepare to celebrate World Water Day on March 22, Filters Fast would like to recognize some of our water filter vendors who have implemented impressive recycling programs for their products and going green initiatives.

Mavea offers a comprehensive recycling program where every part is broken down, cleaned and re-used. Nothing goes to the landfill. Return a minimum of 6 “Mavea” filters (only). They will pay the shipping costs. Simply request a pre-paid shipping label. https://www.mavea.com/mavea/mavea-recycling.html?L=0

Rainshow’r is now proud to partner with Active Recycling, an environmentally aware recycler, who understands our desire to limit our impact. For more information about their recycling program visit http://www.rainshowermfg.com/page6/page6.html.

Brita has a recycling campaign that recycles its carbon filters for the pitchers and faucet attachment models. For more information on recycling your Brita, filter visit http://www.brita.com/.

ZeroWater recycles their filters by separating each filter, then sending the plastic along with the materials inside to be sent to various facilities for reuse. Visit http://ww2.zerowater.com/recycling/ for more information.

Everpure water filtration products are recyclable and details on recycling locations can be found at www.everpure.com/ or  you can contact Everpure at (800) 323-7873.

Make sure you are only sending filters made by these companies to avoid being charged for additional shipping. Through recycling, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste that litters our landfills and save energy compared to creating new waste with new products. Everything we do or don’t do plays a vital role in the health and dynamics of planet Earth.

Are You Guilty of Abusing Your Garbage Disposal?

All too often, if you have a garbage disposal, you may be guilty of trying to put something in it that could result in costly repairs down the road. As we engage in carrying out our spring-cleaning tasks, we are sometimes stunned by the repulsive stench coming from our kitchen sink drain or garbage disposal. When it begins to smell as if something died in there, it probably did.

We tend to think that the powerful motor and blade of the garbage disposal can grind and dissolve just about anything that is shoved down the narrow opening. As a word of caution, the following things should not go in your garbage disposal that could cause irreparable damage:

Things that can easily become trapped, wedged or cause damage to the motor and blades of your garbage disposal: Bones from meat or poultry, Seeds or stone fruit pits from plums, avocados or olives.

Things that could wrap around the blades of your disposal and prevent water from flowing through it: The thin membrane of eggshells, stringy vegetables and starchy vegetables such as potato peels.

Things that can expand and clog: Rice, pasta and coffee grinds could continue to expand and create a water flow problem in your drain or disposal.

Things that could solidify: Cooking grease is a definite no-no. As it cools, it can solidify in the drain, create a massive clog and back up excess kitchen scraps in your sink.

The garbage disposal is not a trash compactor, but designed to get rid of harmless kitchen scraps. Along with damage to your garbage disposal, you may experience a strong foul odor that comes from food and grease being trapped in your disposer or sink. The Summit Disposer Care Garbage Disposal Cleaner is a foaming lemon scented cleaning pack that features a bleach alternative, which helps to reduce and remove odors permeating from your garbage disposal unit. These garbage disposal-cleaning packets are designed to use weekly and are safe on septic systems, because they do not contain phosphates.

Stay away from the verdict of being found guilty for abusing your garbage disposal. Avoid the urge to throw something down the drain that could harm operable components. To keep your drain and garbage disposal smelling fresh and clean, try the Summit Disposer Care Garbage Disposal Cleaner for that pleasant lemony scent.

Filters Fast Honors A Special Group of Valentines

On Tuesday February 14, 2012, the subsidiaries of Filters Fast LLC (FiltersFast.com, W3 Project: Work and Walk for Water and Filters Fast Local Service) surprised the teachers and staff of Indian Trail Elementary School, in Indian Trail, North Carolina with “Thank You for Being My Valentine” gifts. The company treasures the importance of what our hardworking teachers and administrators contribute to the growth and development of our children. Often, these hardworking professionals do not hear or receive our gratitude for what they do five days out of the week.

This is a critical time where we find so many of our schools suffering for basic core necessities due to budget cuts for the fiscal year. Many teachers have to use their personal money to provide these basic and much needed items for their students. For Valentine’s Day, Filters Fast wanted to reach out and simply say thank you to the hard working professionals at Indian Trail Elementary School. We hope that at least for one day, we were able to put a smile on their faces and let them know how very special they are to our community and the educational system.

Filters Fast wants to extend a special thank you to the following staff members from Indian Trail Elementary School who were instrumental in helping us to pull off our Valentine’s Day surprise and for working with us to help them with upcoming projects to benefit the school:

Candice Boatright, Principal
Kelly Ransbottom, Bookkeeper
Allison Audet, Physical Education Teacher
