Making New Year’s resolutions is a tradition for about 45% of Americans this time of year.  On the Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions for 2014, losing weight took the #1 spot.  Staying fit and healthy was #5.  How do you rate your most important resolutions to the least important?  I’ve decide what needs to be on my list for 2015.  Make a conscience effort to drink more water is #1, followed by eating healthier, and then lose weight.  If I can follow the first two, then the weight loss will pretty much naturally happen.

Drinking water is a challenge for me because of the love I have for diet soda (although I have gotten better at the amount I drink daily).  Whether you choose to buy bottled water or prefer to have a filtering system (filtered water pitcher, etc.) in your home, adding water to your daily intake is very important.  If you don’t enjoy drinking plain water, get creative and add slices of lemon, limes, cucumbers, or anything else you love that gives that added flavor to entice you to drink more!  If you don’t prefer going the bottled water route (you might be trying to be environmentally friendly) look into purchasing a water filter pitcher so that you have clean, fresh water at your finger tips.

Let’s face it folks, when you have good health, everything else is icing on top.  You may list things like spend more time with family, getting organized, quitting smoking (GOOD one), falling in love, etc., (these were also listed on the top 10 for 2014) but to be able to achieve those you need to stay healthy.  It doesn’t matter how much money you are striving to make if you aren’t healthy enough to be out there spending it on the things that you love or want to do.  We all need to slow down and take more time for ourselves.  Try to start adding a long hot soaking bath at the end of your day, or perhaps meditation.  Strive to get more sleep to let your body recover from a stressful day.

How many times have you heard someone say, “if I knew back then what I know now, I would have taken better care of myself”?  When we are young, I think most of us don’t stop to think about the future, not just next year, but years to come.  We tend to live in the moment.  It’s important to start making lifestyle changes now to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

How to Clean a Humidifier

It’s that time of year again to bring the humidifier out of storage, give it a good cleaning and start using it!  With the cold weather here, it is causing many to suffer with respiratory and skin conditions.  Our trusty humidifier helps relieve itchy eyes, sore throat, and cracked skin by adding moisture to the dried out air. As beneficial as it is to use a humidifier, you must remember to properly clean and maintain it regularly, or it could potentially be detrimental to your health. If not cleaned regularly, bacteria and mold can grow in the tank, which then goes into the air through the mist. Keeping the humidifier tank clean is so important!

Here are some general instructions on cleaning a humidifier to keep it in great working condition:

  • After you have unplugged your unit, empty out the water from the tank.
  • Remove the filter from the humidifier and rinse it with cold water under your faucet. Never use any cleaning solutions as it can cause damage to the filter. You can gently rub your fingers over the filter to help loosen any debris that may be on it.  After thoroughly rinsing the filter, place on a towel to let any excess water drain off.  Replace the filter in the unit when thoroughly dry.
  • To clean the tank, pour in a good amount of undiluted white vinegar and swish it around, cleaning the entire tank area, and then let it sit for approximately 30 minutes. You can use a soft bristle brush to gently scrub any residue or buildup.  If you find that there are hard to clean areas, repeat this process again.  Make sure to move the solution all around the tank, coating the entire tank. After cleaning is complete, rinse the tank thoroughly.
  • Next you want to disinfect the humidifier. Fill the tank with water and add one teaspoon of bleach to every gallon of water.  Or if you prefer not to use bleach, you can use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Move the solution of your choice all around the tank, making sure to coat the entire tank, and then let it sit for approximately 30 minutes. After disinfecting has been completed, rinse the tank thoroughly.
  • The humidifier has now been cleaned and disinfected properly and is ready to add water into the tank.

When you are using your humidifier every day, you should be emptying and refilling it every day with clean distilled water.  Lastly, remember to clean and disinfect your humidifier at least once a week!
