Who Needs a Leprechaun for These St. Patrick’s Day Lucky Charms?

Each year on March 17, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Did you know that the original color associated with St. Patrick was blue? The color blue is often connected to depth and stability, but also symbolizes trust, faith, loyalty, wisdom and truth. As early as the 17th century, however, the color green was worn in celebration of this day. Green is also symbolic of balance, life, nature, fertility, health, good luck, tranquility, well-being and even jealousy.

For over 1,000 years, the Irish observed St. Patrick’s Day as a religious holiday, although it is steeped with deep-rooted folklore. From shamrocks to leprechauns sitting on a pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in the United States and abroad with Irish inspired feasts, parades and gallantly wearing many hues of green. To commemorate this lucky day and the arrival of spring, we decided to share some of our all time favorite green items that do not require a 4-leaf clover for good luck.

Water Filtration Pitchers: Green Brita Grand Water Filter Pitcher and the Green Elemaris XL Water Filtration Pitcher.

Reusable Water Bottles:  Be Green Klean Kanteen 27 oz Bottle & Loop Cap, Green Vapur Anti Bottle Water Bottle and KOR Delta Sawgrass Green Water Bottle.

Humidifiers: Green Crane EE-5301 Cool Mist Humidifier and Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Frog Humidifier.

Ireland is known for its lush green landscape and is thus named the Emerald Isle. Is it really true that if you do not wear green on St. Patrick’s Day you will get pinched by a leprechaun? Moreover, what about the “Fighting Irish” of Notre Dame? Will they wear green on St. Patrick’s Day or are they immune to the pinches by the legendary leprechauns?

This is one gift that mom will use over and over again.

3. Reusable Water Bottle

As we stated in a recent post, reusable water bottles are the perfect active wear fashion accessory. Besides that, they will help mom save money that she’d otherwise spend on single-use, plastic bottled water. A Klean Kanteen filled with already-filtered tap water, or a Brita bottle that comes with a built-in filter are the perfect gifts for moms who are constantly on-the-go.

4. Sprite Shower Falls Multi-Position Filtered Shower Head

7. A New Microwave Filter

This is one set of products that many people don’t know we carry. In fact, it’s one of the most neglected items in the home, as most people do not even turn on their microwave & hood range vents while cooking. Even if they do, the filter likely hasn’t been cleaned or replaced in quite some time. To learn more about the necessity for range hood filters, check out this post we did last year. In the meantime, mom’s microwave filter probably needs replacing, so buy her a new one from Filters Fast.

All the moms out there: which one of these items says I love you, best?

The Fashion Must-Have for Accessorizing Active Wear

When you attend an exercise class, workout at the gym or if you are the consummate outdoor enthusiast, don’t forget your unisex, eco-friendly fashion accessory that serves as a source of refreshment simultaneously. Am I talking about a dazzling resistance band? No. Rhinestone studded hand weights? Nope. Could it be the latest leggings, hoodies, shorts, footwear or racerback tank tops? Nah. The fashion accessory that’s in vogue and gaining popularity during workout routines and in athletic wear are eco-friendly, colorful reusable water bottles. Water bottles? Yes, reusable, environmentally friendly water bottles.

Since there is so much controversy surrounding the hazards of plastic water bottles affecting wildlife and the environment, investing in a reusable water bottle is an economical, safe, durable and fashionable alternative. Upon arriving on my first day of Zumba, I noticed that most of the people in my class had the same fashion “must-have” in mind. The splash of multi-colored reusable water bottles that everyone clutched in their hands like a glass of fine wine looked like fragments from a rainbow.

Several attendees had cute little collapsible water bottles that you could easily fit in your pocket, handbag or backpack once they were empty. Many had sports bottles that were BPA free and made from food-grade stainless steel. A few of the really serious minded people carried personal water bottle purifiers that contain a carbon pre-filter to remove waterborne contaminants from your drinking water. Surprisingly, my new workout buddies are insightful advocates for eco-friendly water bottle solutions.

What hot fashion statement is your reusable water bottle sporting? Ocean blue? Red Hot Red? Emerald green? Vivacious purple? Brushed steel? Tell us about your eco-friendly, recyclable, water bottle fashion statement. When and where do you use yours the most? How do you feel about revolutionizing alternative solutions for protecting the environment from plastic water bottles, while quenching your thirst? We’d love to hear from you. Remember, reusable water bottles are a workout accessory that’s definitely in vogue!

Ecowell: An Eco-Friendly Alternative to Vending Machines

Thanks to students, Brian Boler, Andy Whitaker and Reid Schilperoort, we can now officially say goodbye to vending machines full of plastic bottles. This team of entrepreneurs has managed to make reusable water bottles even more convenient with their recent class-project-turned-business-venture:

Ecowell. A vending kiosk that dispenses hot, cold or carbonated water with a choice of over 20 fruit juice flavors, two sweeteners and five vitamin supplements. This eco-friendly alternative to vending machines allows you to create your own beverage, dispensing it straight into your own reusable Klean Kanteen. None of the fruit juice flavors contain high fructose corn syrup, and the kiosk can dispense any combination of flavors, light or full, depending on your preference. Both of these features allow you to create a healthier beverage than those which are normally available in standard vending machines. Moreover, with Ecowell’s convenient Tap-Tag system, patrons can create an account right at the kiosk and use their Tap-Tag to select and pay for their drinks at each visit. Ecowell is a great invention for office buildings and schools where bottled water and soda are consumed on a regular basis.

Beverages ordered and filled at the Ecowell kiosk are less expensive than the average bottle of water, juice or soda purchased from a conventional vending machine. A 16-oz. cold glass of purified water is $0.55. Add three fruit flavors and pay only $1.50. Considering that a Vitamin Water is usually at least $1.75, and a Snapple beverage can cost around $2.50, students and workers are getting a great deal for a customized, healthy, eco-friendly beverage. For example, instead of buying a Focus Kiwi-Strawberry Vitamin Water, you can simply create your own mix of fruit-flavored water and add the “StudyBoost” vitamin supplement for added focus and retention.

Ecowell truly leaves the consumer with no excuses to drink bottled water. At home, you can make your own flavored water with the PUR flavor options pitcher or PUR faucet mount with flavor options. With the Ecowell kiosk, now you can make your own flavored water and even soda. This new invention might just make more schools consider banning bottled water.

Anti-Bottled Water Celebrities

Last week, we did a blog post on celebrities for bottled water.  You didn’t just think we’d leave you hanging without presenting the other side of the equation, did you?  The celebrities for bottled water endorse the commodity by giving it a sexy image.  It appears that those against bottled water bring a little more to the table than a sexy appearance.  Whose side are you on?

Oprah Winfrey

One of the most followed and admired television faces in America added the environment to her list of favorite things over a year ago.  Along with reusable grocery bags and Seventh Generation cleaning products, Oprah has switched to reusable water bottles to reduce plastic bottle waste.

Adam Yauch

Former Beastie Boys rapper, Adam Yauch, calls out Nestle, Pepsi and Coca-Cola in his award-winning documentary film Flow: For Love of Water. The movie bashes bottled water companies for their “privatization of the world’s dwindling fresh-water supply.”  See our list of must-watch water movies for more information on Flow along with other, similar films.

Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper and Relentless 7

This year, Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper and Relentless 7 are all teaming up with Brita, Nalgene and the Filter for Good campaign to rid their summer tours of plastic water bottles.  At each concert, refilling stations will be set up where fans can obtain and refill free, reusable water bottles.  These stations will also supply further information on ways to conserve and protect the planet.  Brita’s Filter for Good channel, featuring DMB and other similar artists, is available on Pandora.  I think it’s safe to assume that when Dave wrote “Don’t Drink the Water,” he must have been talking about the bottled kind.

Kelly Osbourne

Feeling guilty about sipping bottled spring water, earlier this year daughter of rock star Ozzy Osbourne, Kelly Osbourne, pledged to go green by giving up bottled water, in order to help the environment.

Gisele Bundchen

Brazilian supermodel, Gisele Bundchen has been spotted several times with a SIGG reusable water bottle.  Though it’s uncertain whether she does so in an effort to preserve the environment, it is questionable, considering her marriage to Tom Brady who is actively involved in the Smart Water ad campaigns.

Cindy Crawford

Clearly bottled water companies aren’t the only ones who realize that sexy sells.  Two years ago, PUR Water Filtration partnered with supermodel Cindy Crawford to promote the use of filtered water over bottled.

Garrison Keillor

TreeHugger cites a quote from Garrison Keillor on the wastefulness of bottled water, from a 2007 article in the Salt Lake Tribune.  This Minnesota public radio show host turned his back on bottled water once he realized that tap is just as good or better.  We advocate filtered tap, of course.

President’s Cancer Panel recommends Water Filters

In a new report, the President’s Cancer Panel recommends the use of water filters and reusable water bottles to reduce cancer causing agents. While the President’s Cancer Panel acknowledges that public water filtration plants remove some contaminants, it also maintains that “current technologies cannot remove them all.”

The 240-page report examined a variety of chemicals, contaminants and hazards that can enter our water, soil and air through a variety of sources, such as industrial, agricultural, technological, medical and natural.

“Filtering home tap or well water can decrease exposure to numerous known or suspected carcinogens and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Unless the home water source is known to be contaminated, it is preferable to use filtered tap water instead of commercially bottled water.”

Many of the water filters we carry reduce the contaminants featured in the report, including Atrazine and other herbicides or pesticides, Radon, Mercury, Bisphenol-A, phosphate, arsenic, and “endocrine disrupting chemicals” such as DDT / DDE, pesticides, bisphenol A, and some metals.

We also carry water filters that will remove many of the by-products that result from disinfects like chlorine. These inclue chloroform, bromoform and other trihalomethanes (THMs).

Since they advocate against bottled water, you’re probably wondering what they recommend for transporting your filtered tap water:

“Storing and carrying water in stainless steel, glass, or BPA- and phthalate-free containers will reduce exposure to endocrine-disrupting and other chemicals that may leach  into water from plastics. This action also will decrease the need for plastic bottles, the manufacture of which produces toxic by-products, and reduce the need to dispose of and recycle plastic bottles.”

Later, the report states that biologically-active levels of BPA were found in an estimated 93 percent of Americans.

We have several reusable water bottles, including a line of Klean Kanteen water bottles. These are stainless steel water bottles and, in accordance with the above recommendation, they are BPA free water bottles. If you are a parent, you might want to consider the Klean Kanteen Sippy Cup, since “children are far more vulnerable to environmental toxins and radiation than adults.”
