How to Reduce The Bad Smell from Tap Water

Posted on May 12, 2014 by Kory 3 Comments

tap water

Does your water smell bad?

This is a question many of us can answer with an emphatic “yes”.  The smell of rotten eggs, sulfur, chlorine and other unpleasantness is a common problem for far too many. It’s a shame that the solution to this problem for many people is “I’m not drinking tap water anymore, I’m using just bottled water!”

Yeah, good luck with that.

Unless you were going to use bottled water to drink, cook, bathe, brush your teeth and wash dishes then I don’t think you have much of a solution (which is more like avoiding a problem rather than solving it).

Truthfully, there is a way to reduce this problem from your tap water without spending a fortune and using costly bottled water as an alternative.

The solution is filters (an Earth-shattering revelation for sure). But let’s dive a little deeper into it, shall we?

First, understand what causes smelly drinking water

What causes smelly drinking water and bad tasting drinking water are often the same things:

  • Dissolved solids which often cause a musty odor
  • Hydrogen Sulfide which produces the rotten egg smell
  • Mercury, lead, iron, and arsenic are often responsible for the metallic taste and smells
  • Chlorine used in municipal water treatment processes

Second, decide which filter(s) you should use

Carbon filters are the best bet. However, depending on the application, the type of filter you need could vary. For example, if you are especially concerned about the odor coming from your kitchen sinks faucet, then you would need to consider a faucet mount water filter. If you are concerned about the smell/taste from your refrigerator, replace your refrigerator water filter. For uses for your entire home, use a whole house water filtration system.

Third, install them and replace regularly

Always follow the recommended manufacturer guidelines for installation when installing a filter. We’ve compiled a list of how to change your refrigerator water filter step-by-step that breaks it down by the type of filter you have.

Once installing it, don’t forget to replace them on a regular basis (usually every 4-6 months, depending on usage and filter type). As a general rule, when purchasing a filter (lets use a refrigerator water filter for example), it is best to buy 2 or 3 replacements at the same time to avoid running out (and forgetting to change them) in the future.

Filtration is an effective approach to reducing bad smell from tap water. Check with FiltersFast.com for your filtration needs.
