Using Water to Fight off Psoriasis

Over the years, water has shown to have its health benefits. In fact, drinking water regularly is one the healthiest things you can do. But did you know that water is also a way to help reduce the severity of Psoriasis? Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out incorrect signals that speed up the growth of skin cells. Oftentimes, you will have too many skin cells in one location, causing swelling, flaking and dryness. It can also be itchy, red, sore and very tender.

While there is no cure for Psoriasis, numerous studies suggest that drinking water is crucial in reducing the severity of it. Flushing toxins, healthier and hydrated skin are just a few of the reasons why drinking water is often recommended. Drinking at least 2 liters of water a day may dramatically reduce your Psoriasis. Other ways to help reduce it also include an improved diet consisting of green leafy vegetables.

One method that has worked in the past to reduce the severity of Psoriasis is through the use of Water Softeners. Water softeners are designed to remove calcium and magnesium, which can be very harmful, from your water supply. Hard water often results from a large presence of calcium and magnesium, and oftentimes is not ideal to use when dealing with Psoriasis. Below are great products that will remove the “hard water” from your home:

The Aries 10” Water Softening Filter Cartridge is manufactured to remove calcium and magnesium from your water. This water softening filter cartridge will help keep limescale and other harmful bacteria out of the water that you and your family use daily.

The Pentek Water Softening Resin Filter Cartridge provides a convenient and cost effective way to soften the water in your home at the exact point of need using FDA grade softener resin. The Pentek WS-20-BB uses cation exchange to reduce hardness and scale deposits in your water.

The Pentek 20” Water Filter Housing &WS20 Filter reduces the bad taste and odor in hard water by removing sediment, dirt, rust and other impurities from your drinking water.

The use of humidifiers to keep the skin moist is also suggested to lessen the severity of Psoriasis as well. With World Health Day approaching on April 7, the health benefits of water will certainly be mentioned. But remember, the health benefits of water will do no good to you if the water you consume is not fresh and pure. Make sure that your water is filtered to enjoy the health benefits of this natural resource.

Emergency Preparedness for Your Water Supply

Every year, natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods, disrupt drinking water supplies and wastewater disposal systems. Still however, many people are ill-prepared to deal with this when the situation arises.  When it comes to emergency preparedness with your water supplies, you can never be too careful.

The most important thing you should remember is to only use water that has been properly disinfected for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth. You should also boil water. Boiling water will kill most disease-causing organisms that could be present. Boil the water for a minute, let it cool and store it in a clean container with a lid over it. It is also advised that you follow the advice from local officials, and to look for other sources of portable water in and around your home.

Here at Filters Fast, we know the dangers of drinking contaminated water, and the numerous health risks it poses. Below are great products that will keep your water safe and clean for consumption:

The Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier is the only personal water bottle purification system on the entire water filter market that is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  To use this water bottle purifier, fill the bottle with the water you want purified, insert the specially-designed Katadyn purification system, and drink from virtually any fresh water source.

The Katadyn Ceradyn Drip Water Filter System is a high performance, free standing gravity water filter system. It has a 2.6 gallon capacity for larger quantities of water and is especially useful for larger quantities of people. With this Katadyn filter you can drink safely from streams, rivers and lakes.

The Katadyn Black Combi Endurance Microfilter System is a personal pump action filter which uses a two stage filter composed of activated carbon and ceramic to remove micro-organisms and disease causing agents such as viruses, bacteria, spores, dirt and some chemicals. This Katadyn Combi filter comes with a bottle adaptor and a carrying bag along with a measuring gauge.

Every year, we celebrate World Water Day and American Red Cross Month in recognition of the importance of clean water and helping those in need of it. Let us all do our part to aid others and to make the world a better place.

Hearts Overflowing for the Love of Water

Love is something eternal; the aspect may change, but not the essence.
-Vincent van Gogh

The color we associate a beating heart with is red. The color red symbolizes life, vitality, passion, power, energy, enthusiasm and boldness. Did you know that the more glasses of water you drink each day could lower your risks of suffering from a fatal heart attack or developing cardiovascular disease? According to the 2002 American Journal of Medical Epidemiology, participants who drank five or more glasses of water a day were less likely to suffer a fatal heart attack or develop cardiovascular disease, than people who drank less than two glasses of water per day. They found that the risk factors associated with coronary heart disease appears to be connected to elevated levels of dehydration.

Will Fracking Affect Your Pizza?

Fracking. This controversial topic has made it to the headlines of many news centers across the country. Whether you are for or against it, the debate surrounding this hot topic issue is sure to be important now, and for generations to come. For those of you who are new to the issue, fracking is the process of pumping water and sand underground in hopes of freeing natural gas from underneath the rocks where it is trapped.   Small fractures occur naturally underground, allowing some of this natural gas to be extracted; however, fracking accelerates this process. Opponents of fracking argue that it will contaminate groundwater as well public drinking water systems.

Most recently, the fracking debate has heated up in New York.  Surprisingly, executive chefs, bakers, and restaurant owners are jumping into the frontlines of the debate. Many are making it their mission to raise awareness about the negative effects fracking can have on New York’s cuisine (Farley, thirteen.org). The organization, called Chefs for the Marcellus, has drawn the attention of some big name chefs, including the Food Network’s, Mario Battali. Battali’s four star restaurant, Del Posto gets much of its produce and meats from the farms in upstate New York, where the Marcellus Shale lies, and where Governor Cuomo would like to introduce hydrofracking.

Hoping to appeal to peoples stomachs, Battali and his chef comrades are insisting that fracking will impact the quality of their food. Executive Chef Brooks Headly of Del Posto is also extremely concerned about the effect fracking can have on New York’s eateries, insisting, “NYC is the greatest city of pizza, and a lot of people say that’s because of the water. If we destroy the water supply, we destroy New York pizza” (Farley,thirteen.org).

So, what do you think of the fracking debate? Do you oppose it because you believe it will contaminant groundwater and isn’t environmentally friendly? Are you for it because you believe it will decrease the price of gas and create jobs? Or, like Mario Battali, do you oppose it because you believe it will negatively affect the world-class cuisine found in New York City? Here at Filters Fast, we want to know what you think, so post your thoughts to our comment section or Facebook Page!

Through the Drinking Glass: Are You Drinking Too Much Water a Day?

WaterAt some point in our lives we’ve heard that we should drink around six to eight glasses of water a day. It’s a recommendation that’s rarely challenged and championed by many health advocates. But where exactly do the numbers come from and why? Dr. Margaret McCartney, a general practitioner from Scotland, is challenging the 8-glasses-a-day rule and recently published her thoughts in an article entitled “Waterlogged?” in the British Medical Journal.

Dr. McCartney describes the notion that “we don’t drink enough water” as “thoroughly debunked nonsense,” and that having too much water could be unhealthy. She notes that the recommendation to drink six to eight glasses of water a day is supported by many health officials and organizations, including the NHS (National Health Service). The NHS Choices website even states on its website that we should “try to drink about six to eight glasses of water (or other fluids) a day to prevent dehydration. When the weather is warm or when we get active, we may need more.”

McCartney’s claim is bold, no doubt, but she cites two major sources as evidence. First, Heinz Valtin wrote in the American Journal of Physiology in 2002 that that there is “no scientific evidence that we need to drink that much [water]” and that the “recommendation could be harmful.” Also, a 2008 editiorial in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology stated that “there is no clear evidence of benefit from drinking increased amounts of water…there is simply a lack of evidence in general.”

Others are rushing to support Dr. McCartney’s assertions and are relieved that she’s contributing to this ongoing conversation. The Guardian notes that “we humans are pretty good at regulating our own water intake. When we need to replace fluid there’s this highly accurate mechanism called thirst that prompts us to have a drink.”

A unique idea…drink only when you’re thirsty.

The Fashion Must-Have for Accessorizing Active Wear

When you attend an exercise class, workout at the gym or if you are the consummate outdoor enthusiast, don’t forget your unisex, eco-friendly fashion accessory that serves as a source of refreshment simultaneously. Am I talking about a dazzling resistance band? No. Rhinestone studded hand weights? Nope. Could it be the latest leggings, hoodies, shorts, footwear or racerback tank tops? Nah. The fashion accessory that’s in vogue and gaining popularity during workout routines and in athletic wear are eco-friendly, colorful reusable water bottles. Water bottles? Yes, reusable, environmentally friendly water bottles.

Since there is so much controversy surrounding the hazards of plastic water bottles affecting wildlife and the environment, investing in a reusable water bottle is an economical, safe, durable and fashionable alternative. Upon arriving on my first day of Zumba, I noticed that most of the people in my class had the same fashion “must-have” in mind. The splash of multi-colored reusable water bottles that everyone clutched in their hands like a glass of fine wine looked like fragments from a rainbow.

Several attendees had cute little collapsible water bottles that you could easily fit in your pocket, handbag or backpack once they were empty. Many had sports bottles that were BPA free and made from food-grade stainless steel. A few of the really serious minded people carried personal water bottle purifiers that contain a carbon pre-filter to remove waterborne contaminants from your drinking water. Surprisingly, my new workout buddies are insightful advocates for eco-friendly water bottle solutions.

What hot fashion statement is your reusable water bottle sporting? Ocean blue? Red Hot Red? Emerald green? Vivacious purple? Brushed steel? Tell us about your eco-friendly, recyclable, water bottle fashion statement. When and where do you use yours the most? How do you feel about revolutionizing alternative solutions for protecting the environment from plastic water bottles, while quenching your thirst? We’d love to hear from you. Remember, reusable water bottles are a workout accessory that’s definitely in vogue!

Instapure F5 Faucet Filter named “Best Buy”

Instapure F5I just wanted to share some news on the Instapure F5 Faucet Filter, which was just named a Consumers Digest Best Buy. Since this title is awarded to less than three percent of competing models in each category, it’s worth pointing out what makes this filter worthy of such a distinction.
Though the release doesn’t specify exactly why Consumers Digest named it a Best Buy, we think it probably has a lot to do with the fact that the Instapure F5 reduces far more contaminants than most faucet filters. Most such filters reduce only the taste and odor of Chlorine, but the Instapure F5 also reduces 99.99% of microbial cysts, as well as lead. Given this, it’s not surprising the filter was named a Best Buy, which Consumers Digest defines “as a product that offers the most value for a given amount of money.” Filters Fast sells the filter for only $17.
Scott Wright, Instapure’s chief executive officer, emphasized how just one faucet filter can reduce a person’s dependency on bottled water.
“Every 200-gallon filter we put in the hand of consumers has the potential to eliminate 1500 plastic bottles,” Wright said in a press release. “The Instapure filter is truly a green solution to help individuals reduce their carbon footprint.”

“Does Filters Fast carry filters that remove pharmaceuticals in tap water?”

It’s a question we’ve been bombarded with since yesterday morning, when the Associated Press published an article stating that United States manufacturers and drugmakers have legally released 271 million or more pounds of pharmaceuticals into water sources that often provide drinking water.
During this “PharmaWater” investigation, the AP identified 22 compounds present in drinking water. Included in these compounds are such chemicals as lithium, antibiotics, sedatives, mood stabilizers, sex hormones, skin-bleaching cream and chemicals used to combat head lice and worms.
Yet while drugmakers and manufacturers are certainly responsible for a large portion of the pharmaceuticals in our water, consumers of the pharmaceuticals are just as responsible for depositing pharmaceuticals back into the water supply. After taking these pharmaceuticals, consumers excrete the unabsorbed remainders into the toilet, where they enter the water supply. Flushing drugs down the toilet is a more direct way of doing this, and one that is surprisingly common.
Perhaps the only thing scarier than all of these pharmaceuticals in our drinking water is that there is currently no filter that removes pharmaceuticals from tap water. While companies are currently working on filters that remove pharmaceuticals from water, none do as of yet. Some theorize that filters using activated carbon may work, as the carbon has been shown to capture organic substances that may be found in pharmaceuticals. But as of now, the testing for pharmaceuticals is too insufficient to say whether or not this is the case.
So while we cannot say for certain whether these filters remove pharmaceuticals, we can say that many of our filters do remove contaminants that we know can be harmful to your health, such as arsenic, lead, chlorine, cysts, total dissolved solids, toxic heavy metals and bacteria.
Give us a call to discuss your specific filtration needs. Better yet, consider purchasing one of our many home testing kits, which will tell you exactly what is in your water (again, except for pharmaceuticals).
Then, when you know what’s in your water, give us a call and we’ll suggest a filter that will remove the undesired contaminants.

Katadyn ExStream Water Bottles

With warm weather now gracing much of the country, many are heading to the great outdoors to camp, hike and fish. Depending on how great these outdoors are, keeping hydrated and finding clean water sources can be paramount.
You don’t want to be burdened with carrying bottles upon bottles of drinking water, but at the same time, you don’t want to risk drinking water from streams, lakes and rivers, which can contain waterborne protozoa such as Giardia.
The Katadyn Exstream water bottle allows to drink such water without consuming bacteria and harmful contaminants. The bottle uses an advanced Virustat technology to kill 99.9999% of waterborne viruses. Just dip the bottle into any water source and you instantly have safe and delicious drinking water.
I know what you’re thinking: doesn’t that take some of the fun out of “roughing it”?
Well don’t think for a second that MacGyver himself would prefer a paper clip, a piece of gum and some fishing line over this water bottle. When you’re outdoors and clean drinking water is scarce, this water bottle can be a lifesaver.
Katadyn also makes a variety of pocket filters, siphons and emergency water tabs to ensure you’ll be safe and hydrated when on your next camping or hiking trip.
