Making a Difference – Donate Miles for Clean Water

At Filtersfast.com our employees are making a statement about our corporate social responsibility for the environment and for the people around the world without access to clean drinking water. As partners of The W3 Project with Wine To Water and TrekDesk, the departments in Filtersfast.com are walking for a cause. We are walking to build a community of humanitarians who walk in the pursuit of health and wellness for everyone with two crucial reasons in mind:

1.)    To help provide clean drinking water to those without access to it through our partnership with Wine To Water

2.)    To raise awareness about the small steps we can take to help decrease the obesity problem in our country through our partnership with TrekDesk Treadmill Desks

We are accomplishing these goals throughout our various departments. Many office personnel are walking daily on their TrekDesk Treadmill Desks while compiling miles to donate to The W3 Project. Members within the Warehouse Department are using pedometers to track and donate the miles they walk each day, while carrying out their daily job responsibilities.

We are also collecting aluminum cans to redeem and donate that money to The W3 Project. This donation will be used to help bring clean drinking water to those who do not have access to it.

If you would like to support The W3 Project, visit www.filtersfast.com/w3 and select “Donate Miles” or “Sponsor Miles.” You can also connect with The W3 Project via Twitter and Facebook.

At Filtersfast.com, we believe in making a difference in the environment and for the people around the world. As partners with the W3 Project, we are implementing our corporate social responsibility to reach those around the world in need of clean drinking water, while bringing awareness to the obesity problem we face in the United States.

Students Donate Miles in the W3 Project World Water Day Challenge

Indian Trail Students Donate Their Miles To Save Lives!

The enthusiasm in the eyes of children when they contribute and accomplish something to help thousands of people around the world, is a sight that will bring you to your humble knees. Many of the students at Indian Trail Elementary School in Indian Trail, North Carolina participated in The W3 Project World Water Day Challenge, in their quest to donate each mile they walked for this special project.

Watching the look of anticipation on the faces of each one of these children, literally brings tears to your eyes. They represented diverse ethnicities, genders, personalities and socio-economic backgrounds, which meant absolutely nothing when it came down to walking for a worthy cause.

Upon completion of walking for the W3 Project, students were awarded certificates and a special bag of goodies for their hard work and dedication by donating their miles to provide clean drinking water to at least one person for an entire year. 3M Filtrete made a generous donation to Indian Trail Elementary School and sponsored every mile that each student walked. The W3 Project includes the partnerships of Filtersfast.com, Wine to Water and TrekDesk. Together, they are building a community of humanitarians walking in the pursuit of health and wellness for everyone.

It’s amazing how these children understood the concept that 1 mile = 1 year of clean drinking water for 1 person, while bringing attention to the obesity problem we face in our society. We want to thank the following people from Indian Trail Elementary School who were instrumental in making this project a remarkable success:

Candice Boatright, Principal

Allison Audet, P.E. Teacher

Jenna Mayhew, PTO President

Teachers: Ms. Feinstein, Ms. Baker, Ms. Dixon, Ms. Landers, Ms. Reese, Ms. Rochfort, Ms. Yalich and Ms. Hamilton

Kelly Ransbottom, Bookkeeper

We would like to again thank 3M Filtrete for their sponsorship and to all of the students who unselfishly donated their miles for such a worthy cause, thank you for a job well done! To the parents and guardians of these students, thank you so much for supporting them. See you next year!

World Water Day Kickoff with Indian Trail Elementary School

Today we are celebrating World Water Day. World Water Day is an internationally recognized day that is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), the first World Water Day was designated on March 22, 1993. Each year this day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater.

In recognition of World Water Day, FiltersFast.com, Filters Fast Local Service and the W3 Project is teaming with Indian Trail Elementary School in Indian Trail, North Carolina for a month-long celebration of walking for water. Beginning today and ending on April 22, 2012 which is Earth Day, the 800 member student body at Indian Trail Elementary School is challenged to walk as many miles as they can in this 1-month time-frame and donate the miles they run or walk to the W3 Project. The W3 Project is a partnership that includes FiltersFast.com, TrekDesk and Wine To Water. Together, the W3 partners are building a community of people who walk in pursuit of health and wellness for everyone. By raising awareness about health and the global water crisis, W3 is giving everyone the ability to either “Donate” or “Sponsor” miles in which 100% of all proceeds go to Wine To Water.

This video was especially produced to educate and increase the awareness about the global water crisis for elementary and middle schools, which is used as a template for other schools who want to implement the same type of event at their school. 3M Filtrete, a leader in home filtration systems is sponsoring up to 3,000 miles of the total miles that the students walk at Indian Trail Elementary for their month long initiative. Thank you 3M Filtrete for becoming an important sponsor for Indian Trail Elementary School that will certainly help the school, community and deliver the message about the importance of filtration while helping others in the United States and abroad obtain access to clean drinking water.

Water Charity of the Week: Wine to Water

“Wine symbolizes fortune in our society. Our goal is to give the fortunate population an opportunity to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.” – Wine To Water

Wine to Water

Wine to Water is based on the story of Jesus' first miracle where he turned water into wine.

Doc Hendley, founder of Wine to Water, dreamed up the concept of this water charity while bartending and playing music in nightclubs in Raleigh in 2003. The dream became reality in 2004, when he held his first fundraiser – a wine event that helped him pay for the installation of water systems in Darfur, Sudan. In fact, Doc was living in Darfur in August of that same year, installing the systems, himself.

Wine to Water is based on Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding. When the host ran out of wine, Jesus told the servants to fill six stone water pots with water and draw some out for the headwaiter of the party. When the headwaiter tasted the water that had been turned into wine, he called the bridegroom and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now” (John 2: 9-10). Wine to water seeks to allow Jesus to turn this miracle around for the needy people of the world who don’t have access to clean water by turning the funds raised from the sale of wine into clean water projects.

Wine tastings are the main type of fundraiser event supported by Wine to Water; however, Doc encourages anyone to be creative – to get involved by hosting other types of events as well, such as “a benefit concert, a fundraising dinner, a 5K race or walk, or school dance.” Doc fullfilled this dream the only way he knew how at the time: by playing music and pouring wine; now he encourages others to use their unique talents for the common goal.

Wine to Water has helped to provide clean water to people in 9 countries since 2004. Those who don’t wish to host an event can still donate to the cause directly on the website. The organization also makes and distributes their very own wine – Old Vine Zinfandel and Estate Chardonnay – by the bottle or by the case. A portion of all proceeds from every bottle sold goes toward supporting clean water and sanitation efforts.

Filterpure Distributes Clay Pot Water Filters to Developing Nations

Led by Dr. Richard Wukich, Filterpure brings clean water to developing nations through the manufacturing and distribution of clay pot water filters. These filters are comprised of colloidal silver layered between a 1:1 mixture of clay and sawdust. As water flows through the cracks and crevices in the pot, it passes by the particles of silver which kill bacteria and viruses. (The antimicrobial properties of silver are similar to the benefits of oregano, which we discussed in an earlier post.) The pot sits inside of a large bucket with a spigot at the bottom that allows the water to be easily emptied into containers for drinking. These water filters can clean up to 2.5 liters of water per hour and cost as little as $15 to make. The water comes out 99 percent clean and 100 percent drinkable, and the filter life is at least five years.

Immediately after the earthquake in January, Filterpure was in Haiti distributing filters to victims of the natural disaster. Currently, the water filters are being used in hospitals and temporary tent villages in Haiti, and around the world in developing countries like Sudan, Honduras and Afghanistan, providing clean water to those who did not previously have access to it. Recently, Filterpure partnered with Global Effect and Wine to Water to install a factory in Haiti. The organization not only distributes the filters to developing nations, but also provides the tools and educational resources for local residents to maintain sustainable, affordable safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices long-term.

Filterpure is just one of many water charities around the world.
