The particulate matter in drinking water is what causes the water to appear cloudy or dirty. The clarity of the drinking water can be enhanced depending on the size of the particle that is removed. Each drinking water system is certified to meet a particular Class category, which will determine how fine a particle it can will remove. The difference between a Class I particulate and a Class II particulate is that the Class I will remove any particle between .5-1 micrometers, while the Class II will remove anything between 1-5 micrometers. Obviously, the smaller the micrometer, the better the filtration.
