  • Iron Level 15ppm and current system not cutting it.

We moved into our house about 10 months ago and apparently the area we live in has high iron. A year ago the people who lived here previously put in a new whole house system Aqua Treatment Service with a two tanks that filter in some way and a brine tank. I know very little about it but it is supposed to be able to handle at most 10ppm of iron. In december the iron levels were around 10ppm and the system seemed to be doing its job. Unfortunately a week ago after much rain and a weekend away our shower and toilets are stained brown and when tested the water pre and post filter is testing at 15ppm. We are now aware that this is extremely high and if we have to put in a new system we just want to make sure it is going to be adequate to handle the job. I think the water coming into the house is 7-8gpm but that is about all I know. Our water treatment person is trying to determine what will work but most likely recommending a water right product. Any advice would be much appreciated.

What are the other test results? Hardness? TDS? PH? Bacteria? Nitrates? All of those play into any decision making.

The only thing is know is PH which is 7. Our current system is ATS Air Eductor Series 5600SXT (Model AFE5600-2M) and Softeners Series 255 (Model TT255M-3T). Up until last week this system seemed to be working fine but after a lot of rain it seems the iron level has gone up and everything is stained orange. I am waiting to hear back from the company that was here on what they recommend. I just want to get some idea of what I should expect, what I should ask them, what might work on such high iron levels. I am sorry I knot know more I am just trying to learn as I go. Thanks.

        Here is the analysis results.
        Hardness 8gpg
        Iron 15ppm
        pH 6.5
        TDS 146ppm
        Water flow is 10gpm

This is what our water guy is recommending as a new system.

        Water Right
        ASP1-1354
        FSBF-1054 Brim Filter

Cost is about $5000. Will this system work and is the cost reasonable?

That's a tough one with the iron situation. If I were designing a system for it I would more than likely try some sort of backwashing filter with birm or a similar media, followed by an acid neutralizer with georgia marble to get that PH up to 7 and help with the iron, go through a standard filter (5 micron probably) and then through a dual tank softener such as a Kinetico unit to polish up the water. No single tank unit out there will do well on an installation with iron. Eventually it will bleed through. Be it a month or a year...it's a limitation of the single tank where iron is concerned. It will regenerate with the untreated water which will have some iron in it if the birm unit is all that is used...so it will be "cleaning" itself out with iron in the water. Makes it hard to keep itself cleaned up when it washes in dirty water. Anyway, I would lean towards more than 2 pieces of equipment with 15 PPM of iron. Only because I know that in the past I've seen people get burned by trying to save money on the initial install only to have to add in later when it didn't work to their satisfaction. Just my 2 cents.
