Thread: Just installed Kinetico K5 - boiled wanter turns milky and dirty - why?

    Angry Just installed Kinetico K5 - boiled wanter turns milky and dirty - why?

    I just had the K5 system installed today. I have K5 + VOC filter + mineralization cartrige.I flushed the tank twice as recommended by waiting 2 hours and letting all the water out.

    After that I happily set to make myself a cup of tea out my my new system.

    And noticed that when the water boilled it turned milky , I let it sit in the glass cup for few minutes and I have a awful accumulation of some white gunk on the bottom of the glass.

    Any idea why this is happening? I am ready to call the dealer and give them piece of my mind about this but I thought I would ask others first...

    Any help/suggestions are appreciated

    I have never heard of this reaction but it is most likely coming from the mineral cartridge which replensihes calcium and magnesium back into the drinking water.

    I have tasted this water during follow-ups and found the mineral water tasting like hard water. I personally like my water without any taste. Appearently it is releasing too much per serving.

    Explain or demonstrate this to the dealer. If replacing that cartridge doesn't cure the problem then I suggest eliminating the cartridge all together. A plug needs to be placed in place of the removed cartridge. Remember, the tank will have these minerals until it is flushed completely.

    It may be the mineral element in the cartridge is damaged, or broken into granuals and is dissolving at too high a rate. What is the pH of your source water?

    None of my customers have reported this to me on call back checks or during in home follow-ups but I will keep it in mind and make recommendations. If I hear this a few times, I will contact Kinetico, Inc. to see if this problem is common. If that is the case, I will not caution recommend them any more.

    Thank you very much for the reply.

    I called the dealer and I was told that yes this is most likely the mineral cartridge and I would have to flush it a few more times.

    I was also told that the mineral cartidge is usually pre-soaked in water for few hours and in this case they may have not done this... Honestly - sounds not too likely to me

    What is your experience with the mineralization cartridge?

    The whole reason I had the mineral cartridge is so I could use my old line to the ice maker in the fridge. My old line is copper and I could only use RO water with the copper line with the mineralization cartridge.
