    Default Kinetico water tastes bad

Just got a new Kinetico RO system put in today- and upgrade from our old system w/new filters, etc. . . We've emptied the tank 3x since the installer left per his instructions and the water still tastes bad! It has a fine white grain in the water as well. Slightly disappointing after spending $$ to get a new system and then have it taste bad.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

What model RO do you have?

Not sure what is causing the taste. Has your water been tested positive for PFcC? Are you in Minnesota? PFCs, or perfluorochemicals, are a group of chemical contaninants found in some drinking water supplies.

The filter suited for removal of PFCs is a Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) filter. This filter is standard on the K5 as the polishing (final) filter. A VOC filter will enhance this as well.

Has the dealer been notified? Have them come out and examine your system and product water. I am assuming all the drinking water plumbing was installed new, right?

Measure if you can the TDS. I can't explain why there would be fine white particles coming out. These simply cannot pass through the pre- and post-filters, let alone the membrane.

We are in MN and in the area where well water has been tested w/elevated levels of PFC's and that is why we had them install the recommended filter for this. The installer is coming back on Mon. to retest our water and see what is going on. The other difference we noticed with our new install is that it comes off of the water softener vs the regular water line as it was before. This could also be contributing to the taste that we're not used to- hopefully they can figure out when they come on Mon.

    Thanks for all the input!

What was the precise name of the additional filter? VOC? Did you ad a mineral cartridge as well? These can add a taste of hard water to the post-membrane of the RO.

Get as much info as possible.

Thanks for the reply, we had our installer out again today and they tested the water (TDS 260) and learned the membrane wasn't functioning correctly and therefore nothing was being filtered. We also had a "percolator" as the filter for the PFC's which they switched out to the VOC. The installer said that occasionally the percolator will leave a bad after taste and that is what was contributing. After sanitizing the system and getting all new filters, it is now tasting MUCH better! Nothing like good water to make your day!

Thanks for the information, we were lucky they could come back so quickly so we had drinking water again!
