We have well water that is 6.0 ppm iron, most dissolved, very hard and acidic (6.3). The first thing it meets is a 20 inch big blue before going thru twin softners, potassium carbonate feeder and 20 inch carbon filter. No other water problems detected with the well water. What are opinions on best filter (pleated cellulose,polypropylene,string-wound) for the big blue sediment filter?

Wow! your iron is very high. If you decide to maintain a prefilter I would use a pleated one as they provide better flow rate and most are washable. Do you have pressure gauges on each side of the prefilter? Are you using a submersible pump? 3/4" lines? Copper lines? Metal ot fiberglass pressure tank?

How hard is your water? Is your service water satisfactory? What is the pH at the faucet?

Can you explain the potassium carbonate set up a little better?

Yes the area is notorious for iron in the water (and we don't even have it the worst). submersible pump thru 3/4 copper lines that feed into a fiberglass tank (that I empty with every filter change to wash out sediment). Pressure, pre sediment filter ,is kept 40-60 with no gauge on other end. Hardness is 19 gp. The potassium carb (pot ash) feeder is for ph neutralization and I add bleach to this to cancel any sulfur smell.This is injected to the line via a baffle post softener. The end filter, 20 inch carbon cbc 20, takes the bleach out and despite all previous treatment, turns red at the end of every 1-2 months that I change both filters. End ph is 7-7.5 which I try to maintain by adjusting the feeder rate on the pot ash. I had no idea what water treatment was till I moved here 5 years ago and have self educated out of necessity (service from culligan is not very knowledgeable). End water is good as far as I can tell.The only complaint is that the water will put spots on everything if left to dry (white transparent rings) which I assume is from salt/pot ash addition. I've always been curious what were the "ideal" filters from this application. Thanks for your time
