Hi, I posted a thread some time ago about changing the carbon media in a Autotrol control valve but haven't got around to doing it. I have several other questions. After both inlet and outlet valves are shut off, how do I relieve pressure from media tank? I assume you just dump out old media and spray out to get all of old out but do you just dump new in or should you have some water in tank before dumping in? How much should be added? (weight or certain level in tank) As far as the mineral is concerned, do just place on top of new carbon or does it need to be at a certain depth from the top of the new carbon. Thanks so much in advance for your knowledge and advise

Are you on city water? What water issues is the carbon trying to solve? To relieve pressure, shut off the inlet valve and run water at a faucet--the lower the better. Then shut of outlet valve. Yes, just dump out the media in a safe/convenient location. The media can be dumped safely almost anywhere as it is just carbon. Spray the tank out. For extra caution use bleach or hydrogen peroxide to sanitize the tank. Use about three cups and fill with water. Let stand for an hour and flush out. Depending on how big your tanks are will determine the volume of carbon you put in. For example, if the tank is 10"x54", it will take 1.5 foot. Gives me your tank size. Make sur ethe threads are clear and the oring is lubed with silicone, NOT a petroleum jelly, like Vasoline. Andy Christensen, CWS-II Last edited by Andy CWS : 06-23-2009 at 06:00 AM. |

Andy, I have pond water that goes through a iodine mixture system than into a very large kill tank and then through the carbon filter. The carbon tank is 48" by 9" and has a LCC printed on rank shroud. Thanks for the other info. My last bill also showed a mineral that was added. I assume it is a solid object. What is this for?

We do pond systems, too.
How many gallons is the retention tank? Do you use alum? An RO? I ma not sure what the solid (powder, granuals, block, chips?) is. How is it applies to the water? Do you have pictures? Ponds systems need to be set up very well and be maintained. What instructions do you have? Where are you located? How deep is your pond? Where is your pump? Do you have a floating pond filter? Does your area require permits, inspections, certification? Andy Christensen, CWS-II |

You don't need to answer all those questions, they have nothing to do with what you're doing.
Just dump the carbon, it is granular, not solid. Sanitize the tank with some bleach and pour any gravel under bedding in and then the carbon and put the 'head' on and reconnect the plumbing. Then backwash the filter until the water runs clear out the drain line (it will run black to begin with), rinse it and you are done as soon as you sweep the floor.

szn9rg,
I sent you a private message. I am interested in how your pond system is set up. Let me know if you need any help there. Andy Christensen, CWS-II |

I used all of your advice and was able to successfully change the stone base and the carbon. The only problems were getting the old carbon out and getting the head off the filter tank. I had to use a rubber mallet to break it loose. Other than that it went great. Thanks for all your help as I wouldn't have been able to do it without you. You guys are awesome !!!!!!!!
