Default Can you identify this? Is it worth using?

This came with the house (built 1964) I just bought and is currently not plugged in. The water lines to and from it are closed off, so no water is passing through the system. I see that a replacement filter/softener is in the range of $700-1200, but regardless of price, I like seeing old things work and would prefer to get this to work correctly .... that is, if you guys say it ever can.

You are calling it a water pump, it is a water softener. It is a very old side mount Fleck 1500 control valve (high probability), with an Intermattic day timer controller.

You don't know it yet but you will want to throw it away and replace it. It is inefficient on both water and salt use. The softener could be 50 years old and the resin will not be any good. Replacing the resin is possible IF you have the tool to get the old resin out without having to pick the tank up and dump it out; but the plug in the top of the tank won't allow the tool I have to do that to get into the tank through the small plug hole.

I suggest a new softener with the Clack WS-1 control valve on it.
