Autotrol 255/460i no brine

I just bought a used Autotrol 255/460i. It does not have an air check valve. Can I use the unit without it if I am using a medium that does not need regeneration?
If so is there any thing I need to change in the unit to do that?

If you don't have a regenerant, you don't have any need for an air check, and where your valve would have one is usually capped.

So why are you using a softener valve for a filter?
