Well Water - What system should I get?

Hi,

I am planning to buy a new house and the well water there has the following problems

Turbidity 6NTU
Hardness 231.6 mg/L
Sodium 46.8 mg/L

What kind of system should I get to address the above problems? How much will they cost? Are there any systems with zero or very low maintenance?

You need a water softener, buying online is the lowest cost and buying a national brand from a local dealer will be the most expensive.

The only maintenance is adding some salt once in awhile and keeping the time set correctly.

Is Sodium something to be concerned about? I spoke to a local dealer and he mentioned that only way to reduce sodium is to use Reverse Osmosis system. But pH (current pH is 6.8) is slightly on the acidic side and hence Reverse Osmosis system may not be effective. So I also need to install a neutralizer system. Am I being scammed?

I think by "Electronic" you mean antiscale scale prevention devices and no, they aren't softeners because they don't remove hardness.

Yes too much sodium in your water is a concern. A softener adds 7.85 mg of sodium per liter of softened water per grain per gallon of hardness removed.

Your pH does not prevent you from using an RO, and I would not sell you an AN filter for 6.8 pH. A 6.8 pH is not going to harm your plumbing or fixtures sufficiently to require you to buy a filter. You can visit my site for sizing and other information about softeners.

You are going to need to back track here. You should soften the water and then run through an RO to get the sodium out. PH is not an issue.
