Whole house filter recomendations

I have a whole house filter system that takes the 9 3/4" by 2 1/2" filters. I have a lot of sediment and rust in the water and my ice cubes are light brown in color from the sand/dirt. I have to change the filters about every 3-5 weeks because I use a 5 micron or a 1 micron rated filter and have tried many different filters but have not been able to get a good system to work and get the rust and sediment out of the water. I am currently using 20micron filters and it did not help at all. I do not like having to replace the filters every 3 weeks as that gets expensive and was wondering if there are better filters out there to use with my system. There is also a good water softener (kenmore) and that is working good. I would like some help on which filters to use. Thanks for reading
