It IS necessary to change the filter as close to 6 mos. as possible. Otherwise, it can cause a lot to problems in areas you wouldn't expect,like your icemaker. The water will keep flowing so you don't notice it, but a pressure change is taking place due to the dirty filter.

Filter life

Have just finished the last of 4 of the Brita replacement filters. The Brita has HALF the life of the Maytag brand. This makes the cheaper! Brita filters very expensive to use. Am going to try the Aquafresh replacements next but if they don't pan out, its back to the Maytag OEM filters.

My Magtag refrigerator is equipped with an automatic filter change indicator. A filter last one year. I see in your comments that you state to change filters every 6-9 months. I don't know if it's necessary to change filters that often. My I have your comments?
