Look very closely at the new on-demand water heretas (not hot water heater). They're more expensive, but only use the fuel (whether gas or electricity) when the hot water is turned on. I've saved an average of 40 bucks a month on my gas bill. I like gas simply because if the power goes out, I still have hot, running water.
