Most air filters have a MERV rating that ranges from 1-16.
The lower the number, the less particles will be filtered from your air.
The higher the number the more particles will be filtered, but also the higher the number the less air will flow through your filter.
A typical air filter from your local hardware store has only a MERV of 7, which means dust mites, plant spores and pet dander are all passing through the filter.
Here at Filtersfast.com we carry three different MERV ratings.
MERV 8, 11 and 13.
A filter with a rating of MERV 8 will block: human hair, carpet fibers, pollen, dust mites and plant spores. Plus also some pet dander, bacteria, mold spores, auto emissions and most hair spray particles.
A MERV 11 filter will block all mold spores, auto emissions, hair spray and pet dander. Most bacteria and lung damaging dust and some cooking oil, smog and tobacco smoke.
A MERV 13 filter will block all lung damaging dust. Most cooking oil particles, tobacco smoke, smog and bacteria.
Higher MERV ratings won't increase the efficiency of your system but will increase the amount of particles being filtered.
