When replacing your refrigerator water filter, it is recommended that you “flush” it before use. Flushing your filter means to run water through the new filter several times before using the filter for consumption. All you need is a container that fits into the water dispenser of your refrigerator.
Why do I need to flush my filter?
Regardless of what refrigerator model you have, your fridge filter is most likely made out of a carbon media block that is formed to fit the shape of your filter. When your filter is properly installed, water runs through this block to filter out any particles and contaminants that are picked up before it enters your refrigerator.
The manufacturing and shipping of the filter can cause the carbon particles in the filter media to knock loose. This causes the first few glasses of water to contain bits of carbon which can causes your water to look cloudy and gray. While the carbon bits are not harmful if they are consumed, you will want to avoid drinking it as it can leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
How do I flush my refrigerator filter?
Most manufacturers recommend that you run 3-5 gallons of water through your refrigerator water filter before using it for household purposes. For refrigerators that don’t dispense water, discard the first two batches of ice because the carbon particles can get frozen in ice cubes.
In general, flushing your filter follows 4 basic steps:
To flush:
- Grab a large container that fits in the water dispenser of the refrigerator (this can be a large measuring cup, a large drinking cup or anything big enough that conveniently and comfortably fits into the dispenser)
- Position the container in the water dispenser and press in to begin dispensing water and fill the container. The number of times you will need to fill the container depends on the type of container you are using. For example, if you are using a 4-cup measuring cup, you will need to fill it four times to make 1 gallon. Remember: four cups equal one quart and four quarts equal one gallon.
- Discard the water into the sink. You can reserve the water for watering any plants (tiny carbon bits will not harm the plants)
- Repeat steps 1-3 until you have flushed 3-5 gallons of water
For specific directions to flush your refrigerator water filter, check the owner’s manual. Instructions can vary slightly depending on the type of filter you have so the owner’s manual will be the safest way to ensure all installation and set-up processes are followed correctly.
Regardless of the type of refrigerator you have, you can find your refrigerator water filter on FiltersFast.com. If you have any questions leave them in the comments below and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Barbara,
Thank you for reaching out us. Was the ice maker working before the filter replacement? In some cases it may take up to 24 hours to make ice. If that amount of time has passed with no ice, it’s possible the filter may be defective. If the icemaker was not working prior to filter replacement you may have another issue. We would advise reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting support.

AnnLouise,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please remove the filter. Inspect the filter head and the insertion point in the refrigerator for any damage or obstructions. If none, please reinstall using the manufacturer’s instructions. There may be delay in producing water, but that usually isn’t more than just a few seconds.

Fred,
Thank you for reaching out to us. If the filter is longer it could interfere with the refrigerator doors, depending on where it is installed. Additionally, there could be internal differences that may cause damage or additional wear to other refrigerator components. We would advise using the same filter recommended by the manufacturer. We show the filter below as a replacement for your model:

Jennifer,
Thank you for reaching out to us. If possible, we would recommend trying the old filter. If it does not leak it’s possible the problem may be with the replacement filter. If it does leak there may be an issue with installation or the filter receiver in the refrigerator. If you do not have the old filter to try we would recommend reaching out the manufacturer of the replacement filter for technical support.

Help! I am trying to install a replacement filter in our Kitchenaide—it takes an FDX filter 4. I have done this before with no problem. Today, however, I removed the old filter, then took the cap off the new and tried to put it in. WATER SPRAYED EVERYWHERE!!!!!! This keeps happening no matter how many times I attempt it. I’ve thoroughly wiped down the entire fridge, shelves and lower floor, taking items out, but if I attempt to tighten the new filter, it sprays water again. When I try to close the little compartment and just run some water (it dispenses within the fridge, not outside the door), nothing comes out so I assume the “seal” is incomplete. What can I do???? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for reaching out to us. The refrigerator has a reservoir where the water is held. If the reservoir is depleted more water is brought through the supply line. Depending on that water temperature it can take 15 minutes to an hour for the water to be cooled. If this does not help please reach out to the refrigerator manufacturer directly for troubleshooting support.

Hi. I have successfully been replacing my water filter for years.
However, today, I removed my old filter and attempted to insert the new filter and it would not go in. There seems to be something blocking it.
I even tried to insert the old filter to make sure the problem wasn’t the new filter, but even the old filter wouldn’t insert.
Is the housing unit messed up, somehow? This is a Whirlpool fridge with water filter location in lower right hand side.
Can you help?

Pat,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to say that soaking may be an insufficient way of flushing refrigerator water filters. We have not seen that recommended by any manufacturer. Filters may flush without using so many gallons. We would recommend reaching out to your refrigerator manufacturer for a more application-specific recommendation.

Joan,
Thank you for reaching out to us. The filter should be completely flushed after 6 gallons. The filter may be defective. We would recommend reaching out to the vendor where the filter was purchased and request a replacement.

Isn’t there another way to get rid of the carbon residuals without wasting so much water? For other filters I use I only have to soak the filter for so many minutes. Can’t I just soak the refrigerator filter instead of wasting 3-5 gallons. I know I can use the water on plants but I don’t have any.

I just replaced the water filter in my GE refrigerator. I have run 7 gallons through to flush the lines but get this every time: the first 6 oz or so are clear then the water is dark grey for a few seconds then lightens up as I finish filling the container. My refrigerator water dispenser works fine. Water pressure is normal. But the problem is, the water is not going through the filter. It’s bypassing the filter for some reason. Debbie,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend removing the filter, inspecting the filter head and the insertion point in the refrigerator, and reinstalling using the manufacturer’s instructions. There are a few possible causes for the 1F error code. We would recommend contacting LG for technical support.
debbie says
I recently changed my water filter with the correct LG filter. After receiving a 1F error message a few days later, I emptied the fridge, found a few items stuck behind the freezer drawer, and waited a bit and the error message disappeared, but now the water tastes soapy. It has been coming out at an angle rather than straight down as it always has. Does anyone know what the problem may be? I’m not sure if possibly I got a defective filter and changing that will solve the problem?
Katie says
Anne,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please remove the filter. Inspect the filter tip and the insertion point in the refrigerator for possible obstructions. Reinstall the filter according to the manufacturer instructions. If this is not successful, please reach out to the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

Andrew,
Thank you for sharing your findings about how often you need to change your refrigerator filter. As you stated, there is a wide range of actual volume that’s used by a wide range of uses/users/water impurities. It is recommended that refrigerator filters be changed at least every 6 months, but the frequency of change is ultimately up to the user. Thank you for reading your blog and commenting!
Anne Atkinson says
I have replaced my Whirlpool replacement water filter with the correct one made by Whirlpool. I can get it in but it will not lock that quarter turn. We have tried everything! Is the water still being filtered if it’s not locked in place or are we just wasting $50.00?
Andrew Clark says
RE my Comment/Question submitted few minutes ago: Disregard it; called & learned that packaging of, at least quality, after-market replacements say Gallons of use right on box, 🙂 WHICH, of course is 200 days @ 1 Gal./day. No more than my wife & I use from ‘fridge, that’s enough for at least a YEAR. Gonna” mark boxes @ 10 mo. for when g’kids visit. 🙂
Andrew Clark says
Whirlpool recommends replacement (with ONLY their own filter, of course!) every 6 mo. & says their Change light is set for that. GIVEN the WIDE range of actual volume that’s used by WIDE range of uses /users/water impurities, Time is the least accurate way to predict filter life; only Flow volume, AT stated “impurities” standard, run through it really useful.
SO, How can user know Gallons use available at known “Low/Medium/High” impurities’ standard?? THAT known, roughly figuring Daily/Weekly Volume use, BINGO! Medium-to-Low-Volume users can ignore the light, mark calendars, & CHANGE ONLY WHEN NEEDED! 🙂

Brian,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend removing the filter and checking the filter tip and the insertion point for any possible obstructions. This past week I had ordered a new water filter for my refrigerator.
When I first installed it I think it worked okay but shortly after I started having a problem with the water dispencer. Long story short, when I remove the filter the dispencer works fine but when I re install it the dispencer is down to a little more that a trickle. The dispenser switch/pump? sounds like a kids toy machine gun (keeps repeating until I take the cup away from the switch). I put the old one back in and it did the same thing. I have tried several times to flush the system but that does not seem to have any affect. Is it possible i haven’t flushed it enough?
Thanks
Katie says
Inez,
Have you tried resetting the change filter light? The instructions should be in your owner’s manual.Or you can share the make and model of your refrigerator with us and we will try to find the instructions for you.

Katie says
Ivan,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please remove the filter. Inspect the filter head and the insertion point on the refrigerator for any possible obstructions. If there are none, please reinstall using the manufacturer’s instructions. We would also recommend checking the water supply line to the refrigerator to make sure there are no kinks. If this did not help it is possible the filter may be defective. Please reach out to the vendor for a replacement.
Ivan says

Melody,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear that. Please send a short message and an image of your application to [email protected]. We would be happy to take a look!
Katie says
Louise,
Thank you for reaching out to us. If your refrigerator has a water dispenser and ice maker it will not be absolutely necessary to dispose of the first batch of ice; so long as the filter is being properly flushed using the dispenser. You may perform a visual inspection of the ice. If there are any indications of carbon content you may dispose of the first batch.
Katie says
Roberta,
Thank you for reaching out to us. My apologies. If that was purchased at http://www.filtersfast.com you may reach out to us directly at [email protected]. We currently offer a 365-day return policy, starting from the original date of purchase. http://www.filtersfast.com/termsAndCond.asp
Please ensure the filter is properly flushed. Some filters may require dispensing up to 6 gallons. Once this has been done the water should be clear and taste great.

Katie says
Shay,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We do not see any literature from the manufacturer that would suggest that could damage the refrigerator. Filling the filter first helps minimize the opportunity for air to enter the system. If this is not done first it may take just a little bit longer to flush the filter. You may experience some sputtering when trying the use the dispenser at first. This should quickly subside and the dispenser should function as normal after that.
Shay says
Someone installed the Ge water filter for me but forgot to fill it with water first and just twisted the new water filter on. Does that damage the refrigerator?
Katie says
Robert,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please ensure the filter is properly flushed. Some filters may require dispensing up to 6 gallons. Once this has been done the water should be clear and taste great. We’ve replace our Electrolux water filter with 4 filters and all have discolored/cloudy water in the container but the old filter works fine. What can I do and what is the problem?
Katie says
Najwa,
Thank you for reaching out to us. This flushing process relieves any trapped air in the water line which may cause the dispenser to sputter. It also flushes out any loose carbon in the filter. For most applications, it will be sufficient to flush the filter until the sputtering stops and the water produced is clear. We would rely on the recommendation from the filter manufacturer. Some recommend dispensing up to 6 gallons.
Najwa says
Am I supposed to flush 4 gallons of water after changing the filter?
Katie says
Rich,
Thank you for reaching out to us. For models without a water dispenser, it is recommended to dispose of the first two batches of ice. After that, the filter should be flushed and the ice produced should have a great taste!
Rich says
My refrigerator has an ice maker, but no water dispenser. How can I flush the filter?
Katie says
Cassandra,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please fill a clear glass and inspect the water. If it clears quickly then that is caused by tiny air bubbles and is safe. If the water does not become clear and is occurring at other faucets in the home please have the water tested.
Katie says
Charlie,
Thank you for reaching out to us. It is possible the new filter may be defective. We would recommend trying a different filter. If the issue persists, we would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer of your refrigerator for technical support.
Cassandra says
Is it normal for the water to look bubbly when getting it from the fridge? Is it due to the high impact of the water coming out or is it bad water?
Charlie says

Christopher,
Thank you for reaching out to us. It is normally recommended to dispose of the first two batches of ice after filter replacement.
Christopher Walker says
My refrigerator has an ice maker only. There is no way to dispense water. How do I flush a new filter if I only have an ice maker. Do I need to dump all new ice after changing the filter? If so how many times?
Katie says
K,
Thank you for reaching out to us. You are using a TDS meter. There will be an increase in TDS with a new water filter while the loose carbon is being flushed out. TDS reduction requires advanced filtration (reverse osmosis, distillation, or ion exchange). Refrigerator filters are not designed to reduce TDS.
Katie says
Ezmir,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Most refrigerator filters are limited in the materials they use (white polypropylene plastic and black/gray carbon). We would recommend checking the water supply lines for any signs of build-up. If so, we would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.
Ezmir says
Hi there, is it anyway normal to see green mossy stuff that looks like algae flowing from a new filter whilst priming or flushing?

I have the same issue as Jill. I’ve replaced it once before and the water did dispense, no problem. This time the water will not dispense. Also my ice maker is not working, which is what prompted me to get a new filter.
Thanks!
Katie says
Jill,
Thank you for reaching out to us. It is normally recommended to remove caps, plastic wrap, and foils prior to installation. We would recommend removing the filter and inspecting it along with the insertion point in the refrigerator for any possible obstructions. If there are no obstructions we would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer directly for troubleshooting information.
Jill says
I just installed a new water filter…..followed all instructions. No water will dispense. I put the old filter back on and still no water will dispense…..and, now my ice maker not working? Please advise.

Elise,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Yes, this filter packaging does come with a dust cover for the prongs. That should be removed prior to installation. The initial rush of dark water is normal. That flushes the filter of any loose carbon particles. Have a great week!
Elise says
I replaced my kenmore 046-9999 water filter for the first time and saw no instructions on the replacement cartridge, so I followed the instructions in my fridge manual, but there was only the slightest click effect when I installed the new filter even when I pushed it as far as it could go. For some reason my water dispenser suddenly stopped dispensing and the potential cause listed in the manual read “filter not seated properly” and to remove and reinstall the filter. As I began that step I noticed a small clear cap on each prong of the cartridge and deduced they must need to be removed for the filter to snap into the proper position, so I removed them and reinstalled the cartridge and this time it really clicked into position. But when I dispensed water it spurt out with great force followed by pure black liquid and then the water began to run clear again. I disposed my accumulated ice and dispensed 3 gallons of water to flush the water line and that water all ran clear. Am I all set now or was I wrong to remove the plastic caps from the filter prongs and now need to take further corrective measures for my water to be safe for consumption?
Katie says
Hoosierdaddy,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Any air in the line will be pushed out as water passes through. For refrigerators, without a water dispenser, it is recommended to dispose of the first two batches of ice.
Hoosierdaddy says
How do I remove the air from my LG water filter is I don’t have a water dispenser — only an icemaker?
Katie says
Rich,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Once the filter and the reservoir have been flushed there should be no carbon particles remaining. Note, some filters may require dispensing up to 6 gallons. If the issue persists we would recommend reaching out to the vendor for a replacement filter.
Rich says
My refrigerator has a water reservoir, presumably for providing cold water. If I flush out 4 gallons of water out the water dispenser, there will be some carbon particles left in the reservoir. Is this an issue?
Katie says
Wayne,
Thank you for reaching out to us. That is an excellent question. We do not see any warnings against doing this. To be safe we would recommend contacting the manufacturer of the refrigerator to confirm.
Katie says
K,
Thank you for reaching out to us. That is an excellent question. That method can be somewhat effective with standard drop-in cartridges. We don’t believe this will be so effective with refrigerator filters. For refrigerators, without a water dispenser, it is normally recommended to dispose of the first two batches of ice after the filter has been replaced.
Katie says
Louise,
Thank you for reaching out to us. The capacity of the filter will depend on water quality and usage. It is possible the filter can last as little as one month. The 6 month time frame is a recommended replacement period (this is a maximum time frame). The filter change indicator is normally set on a timer to go off at 6 months. If water is no longer going through the filter it is time to change. Please order a new replacement filter. Please consider adding a whole house water filter to help extend the capacity of the refrigerator filter.
Wayne says
Hi there. I have a fridge with dispenser. We’ve not used the water for about 3 years. Would it be ok to change the filter as run 3-4 gallons through with a new filter and then use as normal? Thank you for you assistance.

Louise says
My ultraw filter only lasted less only 3 months I replaced it. This is a single person apartment. Is there a problem. The replace light did not go on but water was a trickle. Should I reset the filter light?
Katie says
Dani,
Thank you for reaching out to us. The new filter would not affect the temperature of the water. It seems the cool water in your refrigerator’s reservoir has run out. Please allow enough time for the water in the reservoir to chill. We would suggest letting it sit overnight and trying again.
Dani says
I have just replaced my water filter and while flushing it the water that comes out is warm/hot. Is that common?
Katie says
Jason,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would be happy to assist you in locating the correct filter! We are sorry to say that we do not see a reference to that part number, CD100p. If you would provide the model number to the refrigerator we would be happy to research that for you. The model number is normally located on a label on the door jamb or inside the refrigerator.
Jason says
Hi I have a CD100p filter can I use it on my Samsung household fridge

Hi Alicia,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please ensure the filter is properly flushed. Some filters may require dispensing up to 6 gallons. Once this has been done the water should be clear and taste great. If the water does not clear please reach out to the vendor for a replacement filter.
Alicia says
Hi. I have an LG fridge. And i have bought a LG filter. Not the lower brand. I have flushed well beyond recommend. And I’m still getting tons of carbon flakes in my water.
Katie says
Liz,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Has the filter been properly flushed? It is normally recommended to dispense 1-2 gallons of water to flush the filter. Some filters may require dispensing up to 6 gallons. After this has been done the water produced should be clear and taste great.
We see you mentioned this was installed months earlier. It is recommended to replace the filter every 6 months. If this amount of time has passed please install a brand new filter. If it has been less than 6 months since installation please reach out to the vendor of your filter for a replacement.
Katie says
Glenda,
Thank you for reaching out to us. The filter light has to be manually reset. There may be a dedicated reset button. If not you may have to press a combination of keys (labeled as such) to reset the light. We would recommend reviewing your owner’s manual to confirm the reset instructions for your particular model.

Val says
Just replaced my water filter MWF then the fridge died. Can I put this filter into the new fridge? MWF also.

My husband replaced our water filter in whirlpool side by side refrigator . We get ice. But no water. How do we fix this ?
Kory says
Hello Judi, please flush the filter for 3-5 gallons of water before tasting. Once the filter line has been cleared the water should taste better.
JUDI WILD says
With great difficulty I changed the filter (my husband now has Alzheimer’s so it is up to me) the cap at the end fell off but the new filter(3) fit in as the side button popped out. The water tastes terrible – exactly like tap water so I am back to using bottled water
Kory says
Hello,
You should dump out the first full tray after replacement and then the second tray should be fine.
Thank you,
Colleen Rockwell says
How much ice should I throw out after replacing my filter? I only have the filter for ice. No water dispenser on fridge. 🙁

I always was concerned in this subject matter and stock still was, thankyou for posting.

Hello Joel, you may have received a defective filter. Any unpleasant tastes or odors indicate a defective filter. Did you purchase the filter from us or another outlet?

Hi, I recently replaced my Kenmore Clear water filter in my fridge on June 1, with the recommended model #46 9690. I bought the filters online (not from Sears). I flushed 2.5 gallons as recommended when I installed the filter. We’ve been getting very chalky tasting water ever since. The packaging looks identical to the packaging we had gotten previously from Sears. Are there any bogus water filters on the market that might be causing the chalky taste? Thanks!
Kory says
Hello, there may be air in the water line from changing the filter. Take the filter out, reinstall it and flush the water for 3-5 gallons and it should fix the problem.
Carol muir says
There is a terrible noise when we get water after changing the filter
Kory says
Hello, please allow 24-48 hours after filter change to allow the ice maker to start producing more ice.
Thank you,

Just replaced a whirlpool filter and flushed 4 gallons. I get water fine but haven’t produced any ice since changing the filter. What can I do.

Sheryl says
I put in a new Maytag filter and it is leaving carbon bits in the glasses of water. I have flushed it and used it for two weeks and it still doing it. What is causing this?
Kory says
Hello Rosa, it sounds like carbon did not get flushed out of the filter before you inserted it. Did you flush the filter for 3-5 gallons before use?
Rosa andrus says
Changed the filter and ice is almost black
Kory says
Hello John,
It sounds like the filter is not installed correctly and that’s why the water is leaking out. What model number refrigerator and filter are you using?

Is it safe to use the ice if you by pass using the water filter?

Hello,
We suggest contacting the manufacturer of the refrigerator, we cannot trouble shoot actual refrigerator issues.
Thank you,
Lyn says
With the new replacement filter, the refrigerator is still making the sound it makes when you need to replace the filter. The water is dispensing fine, but the sound should not be happening. What needs to be done? Thank you.
Kory says
Hello Lindsay,
Did you flush your filter before using? It may be loose carbon coming through the water.
Lindsay Atolikian says
Hi just got my new filter a week ago and sti dispensing grey water. Ice looks white grey too is the filter defected.
Kory says
Hello Carmen,
Excellent question! Have you flushed the water filter for 3-5 gallons? If not, please flush the filter and then see if the new ice that comes out has the carbon in it. It is just loose carbon from the filter that is making it into the ice, completely harmless.
Thank you,
Carmen Orndorff says
How long does the carbon stay in the Ice? I use it daily and have emptied the ice at least 20 times and I still see it at the bottom of my drinking container.
Kory says
Hello Robert,
Are you not having any water flow after inserting a new filter or no water in general?
Robert Harris says
I am getting no water out of water spout.
Kory says
Hello,
Unless you are seeing a decrease in ice put-out, you do not need to flush the filter.
Kory says
Hello Stacie,
What is the filter number that you are currently using? If you have that information, put it into the search bar on our website and the product page will list everything that the filter will eliminate.
Thank you,
Kory says
Hello Krystal,
Water flow should come back within 24 hours after the water filter is installed.
Thank you,

Hello Eddy,
We recommend that you flush the water filter once it is connected for 2-3 gallons.
Kory says
Hello Leanne,
We recommend dumping a tray worth.
Kory says
Hello Steve,
Yes, you may flush the water filter once it is inserted into the fridge, it will need to be flushed for 2-3 gallons of water.
Kory says
Hello Bill,
Something could possibly be going on with your water line. Have you troubleshooted the issue with the manufacturer? That would be our first word of advice.
Kory says
Hello Lloyd,
You should flush the filter for 2-3 gallons of water and then your normal flow should return. There may also be a few air bubbles in the water line causing the delay.
Kory says
Hello Ginette,
The loose carbon particles are harmless, it will not effect you or the quality of water.
Kory says
Hello,
On average, your water filter should be replaced every 3 to 6 months.
Kory says
Hello Leslie, thank you for sharing with us! How long did you flush the filter for? It needs to be flushed 2-3 gallons.

New water filter dispenses water very slow and does not refill the ice cube tray with enough water to make cubes of notmall size and quantity. Have flushed water through the filter and used 12% of the capacity. Called whirlpool about the problem only to be told to keep flushing with water. We have owned this refrigerator for 5 years and never had this problem after changing the filter. Have put the old filter back in and that works fine. When looking at the old filter the prongs have the attachment opening on the opposite side of the new one

I use an in line filter which i connect outside the fridge and under the sink. I just replaced it and ran the water for at least 10 minutes prior to connecting the “out” end to the tube coming from the fridge. the water seems to come out sudsy or foamy after such a long flush. i failed to understand.

I have an Amanda refrigerator. The water dispenser stoped working. I replaced it he filter and it began to work again. After a day it stopped again. I removed the filter, heard a pressure release sound and then put it right back in. Water dispensed again. Next day it stopped again. Repeated process. What could be going on?

I have a frigidaire refrigerator with water and ice on the door. We use the water from the door for drinking and cooking. I would like to know what is actually filtered out of the water. I am looking at buying a ph restore alkaline water pitcher ionizer, and it made me wonder what is being filtered out of the water I am currently using?

Krystal Cenac says
I replaced my water filter a day flushed about 3 gallons of water but the water is dispensing very slowly. How long will it take for the water flow to go back to normal?
Kory says
Hi Cindy, how many gallons of water did you let run through the filter? It is possible that more water needs to be run through before consumption. Also, what filter are you using?
Cindy says
We replaced our water filter 2 months ago, but the first 1/4 cup does not taste right.
Kory says
Assuming that the filter has been inserted properly, this should not stop the filter from working properly. Have you noticed any flow issues since its been replaced?
Robert says
We don’t have the lock that you turn once the filter has been replaced on our Whirlpool (the one where you replace the filter at bottom via a hole in the white plastic vents or screen), does this keep the filter from working? Or does it work when simply popped into place?
Kory says
Be sure that you run 3-5 gallons of water through the filter before use. It sounds like the filter hasn’t been completely flushed yet.
Donna says
We recently replaced our filter. The water now comes out bubbly. Looks almost carbonated. Why is that?
Kory says
Hi Lucy, what kind of filter is it? What type of refrigerator do you have?
Lucy says
After changing my filter I flushed it but the water is coming out cloudy and when fill a glass the sound it makes us loud
Kory says
The best first step is to conduct a water test to determine what exactly is in the water now as that could impact the filter solution for this. Is this the first time this mineral taste has happened?
Nicole says
While a painter was painting our kitchen, he accidentally pinched the copper water line causing a flood in the kitchen. The next day, he had a contractor come over and replace the line with a flex line, but now the water coming out of the dispenser tastes very minerally. What could be happening here? The water filter itself is only about 4 months old.
Kory says
What is the model number for the filter that you installed? Is the problem still persisting?
Bob says
after installing the new filter, i ran water thru it to flush it out
after about 1/2 gallon, the water started to get warm and continued to get
warmer . i stopped after about a gallon or so. the water remained warm coming out for a few hours.
what could be going on here ?
Kory says
Hi, this sounds like an installation problem with the new filter. Since the water comes out of the old filter and not the new one, then you do not have a water valve problem. The new filter is most likely not snapped in all the way. This blog can shed some light on this: http://www.filtersfast.com/blog/index.php/2015/03/troubleshooting-tips-installing-refrigerator-filter/.
quinn says
I just replace my water filter and the water will not come out..but when I put the old one in it comes out perfect please help me
Kory says
Hi! Perhaps try to flush an extra 2 gallons and see what that does to the tiny bubbles. It is possible, this particular filter was just in need of a bit more flushing.
Kiyomi says
Hi,
Umm…I just replaced our water filter, and I flushed out about 5 gallons, however the water still looks a little bubbly when I put it into a drinking glass, is this normal?
Kory says
Hi Roz, we definitely understand your concerns and unfortunately there is no secret to this. You still should be cautious and careful, but sometimes all that is needed is a little extra force. For removal, the problem is sometimes pulling the filter down and out. Is this true for you too? If so, try rocking the filter sideways while pulling down, this should work. Again, you still do want to be careful while doing this.
Roz Waldon says
I cannot twist the water filter out of my ge fridge. It came out easily last time. The fridge is 6 years old and not abused since I live alone. I don’t want to break. What should I do?
Kory says
The water filter is most likely not snapped in all the way. If you feel that it is, and you’re still having issues, it could be the water valve leading to the refrigerator. To check, re-install the old filter. If water comes of the old filter and not the new filter, then there is an installation problem with the new filter and not the water valve. If water does not come out of the old or new filter, then the problem is the water valve. Let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns!
Mary Bergquist says
What is causing my water to run very slowly? I have even put in a new water filter.

Have you checked to make sure the water filter is securely installed? It sounds like the filter may be coming loose which is causing the water stoppage.
Dock Harvey says
The water dispenser works for a month or so, then stops and starts again. However the periods of no water is becoming more frequent and lasting longer. This is with a new filter. The icemaker is not affected. Any thoughts?
Garry L. Hailey says
Nice advice; however if you find a piece of clear plastic hose; whatever length you feel comfortable with. Fit it over the end of the funnel etc. And fill your bucket in one shot. Don’t want to hold the funnel etc; Duck Tape it to the fridge; any sticky left can be removed with rubbing alcohol. Want to set up a super filter system; I raised freshwater angel fish in Florida. You have the access to all that is needed. Garry
Kory says
What type of refrigerator (make and model) and filter are you using?
Mk says
I flushed out 5gallons of water after I replaced the filter and the water doesn’t taste good. I had a GE service come to look at the refrigerator and taste the water . He noticed a foul taste and Oder . But, he couldn’t find a problem with the refrigerator .
Kory says
Hi Afam, ensure that the filter is securely installed into the refrigerator. Often times, if it is not properly secure, the flow rate can slow down.
Adam R. says
After I installed my new refrigerator door water filter, iI noticed that the the pace of the pour was very slow. What should I do to fix it?
TheBigOldDog says
A slightly altered approach is to set your kitchen timer for 5-minutes and keep killing filling, emptying in the sink, and refilling a largest container you can fit in the water dispenser for the 5-minutes. The 5-minutes is derived from the time one of the large sink mounted carbon filter makers recommends you run the water when you change cartridges and it works every time for the large cartridge used in my refrigerator. Luckily I have good sized sauce pan with a nice handle that fits perfectly under the dispenser and so I am not having to fill and empty a million times in the 5-minute period.
Kory says
Hi Ann, this sounds like their could be an issue withe unit itself. Please consult your owners manual for troubleshooting surrounding this issue.
Ann Reynolds says
I just installed a new filter and flushed as directed, however my icemaker is still not making ice, suggestions?
Deborah Holden says
This is for Grady and anyone who is experiencing a slow stream of water from the water dispenser on the fridge. We tried everything to correct that problem (using new filter, no filter, changing the line to the fridge, etc. ) until the plumber came and cleaned out the incoming water line under the kitchen sink. It was clearly corroded and not letting enough water into the line attached to the fridge, even though it wash’t noticeable when using it for the sink or dishwasher, etc. The stream instantly became 10 times more powerful which was a relief because we thought it was just the way our new Whirlpool fridge was going to work which was a huge disappointment.
Kory says
Refrigerator water filter s will generally need to be replaced every 6-12 months (depending on usage and water quality). To find the correct filter you need, please remove the old filter (should be located at the bottom right side) and locate the part number on it. This will let you know which filter to buy for future replacements.
Kory says
What is the part number of the filter you are installing? What is the flow rate according to the manufacturer?
Grady Gore says
After installing new filter and going through the flushing stage the stream from the water spigot was noticiable slower. I reinstalled filter twice and getting still getting slow stream.
Patricia Lamb says

I just purchased a new Samsun refrigerator Side-by-side Model RS25H5111SR. What filter do I need (Model No.) and how long should I wait before changing it? We are only two people.
Kory says
Hi Howard, if the filter fits securely and tightly into place, then you have the correct filter. The Eco-Aqua is a replacement for the GE Smart Water Filter and is designed to meet and/or exceed the original.
Kory says
Great idea, Herb!
howard somerville says
Our REFRIGERATOR IS A G.E. MODEL NO. GSS25JFMB WW. SERIAL NO.GA272873.THEY SENT A Eco AQUA filter, & it don’t filter like the GE SMART WATER FILTERS, so do I have the wrong filter?
Charles Holzman says
Thanks for the tip. I had no idea we should flush 3-5 gallons in order to be safe.
Herb Harjes says
My fridge has a exterior dispenser. Flushing the filter one big glass at a time was a pain. Instead I hooked a piece of flex tubing to a funnel that fits the dispenser. The tube is long enough to reach a bucket on the floor. This allows me to flush the entire 5 gallons at one time.
