Reset your Refrigerator Filter Indicator Light

Most people are not aware that after you change your refrigerator water filter, there are two additional steps that should be taken to properly complete the water filter change.

Step 1: Reset your refrigerator water filter change light

Most new refrigerators now come equipped with an indicator light that notifies you when it is time to change your water filter. This light does not automatically reset when you change your water filter and the light must be manually reset.

Here is a list of refrigerator manufacturers and how to reset the filter change indicator light:

Amana– Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
Frigidaire– Press and Hold the Reset Button Until the Indicator Light Flashes.
GE General Electric– Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
HotPoint– Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.
Jenn-Air– Press and Hold The Water and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Kitchen Aid– Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.
Maytag– Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Samsung– Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.
Whirlpool– Press and Release the Light Button 5 times Quickly.

Step 2: Flush a couple of gallons of water through your new filter

Since refrigerator water filters are made of carbon, some carbon residue is present in the first gallon or two of water. This will not harm you but may leave a bitter taste and residue in your water. If you continue to have these problems after flushing a couple of gallons through the filter, it is possible that you have a defective water filter.

Once these two steps are completed, you are all set to enjoy great tasting ice and water through your refrigerator. If you don’t see your manufacturer listed or the instructions don’t work for your model please post a comment with your make and model number so that we can provide exact instructions for your model.

  1. if the power is not on, then the water will not work. The water is controlled by an electric solenoid valve that will only work while plugged in.

  2. Hi there! We just replaced the filter on our Frigidaire. I hold down the reset button until it flashed green, yellow(orange?) and red over several times, then took my finger off the button, but now there is no color light displayed at all. Shouldn’t it be green now for the next six or so months? It’s just blank, black. :(

  3. I have a samsung side by side and the water has stopped working all together, thfilter is due to be changed but has been working fine up until now, we did have a power cut and have not tried the water since could something have shut itself off or could it be the water filter stops the water when it gets to a certain point???

  4. If you have not connected the water to the refrigerator, and water has not passed through the filter, then you can reset the indicator light. The filter life will not start until the water passes through your filter. Some Samsung refrigerators need to – Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.

Some newer models may be different, and you may need to look at the manual, or look for a reset button near the dispenser.

  5. I have a Maytag its 9 years old water filter needs changing, its been in to long and is stuck . It will not turn , I am afraid I will brake the fixture that holds the water filter. Is there anything I can apply to free the filter so I can remove it. Many thanks for your help.

  6. I have a whirlpool and I’ve follow the steps but my indicator light is flashing yellow/ Orange. What does this mean?

  7. After installing the water filter and following all the instructions, the filter reset light still does not come on. What else should I do?

  8. I have a Samsung but don’t use the water filter as not yet connected. The filter is showing red on the screen
Does this matter and if not how do I get it back to blue???

  9. Was the ice maker making ice before the filter change? It could be a number of different things. The water valve in the back of the refrigerator may have gone bad, or the ice maker unit itself may have gone bad. Those parts can be replaced (part numbers are below). A water line could be frozen which can happen, but is not a common issue. Consider a technician if you are unable to locate the problem.
