Water Softeners Profile:

A water softener removes hard minerals like calcium and magnesium from water using an ion-exchange process.

What are the benefits of having a water softener?

When a high amount of calcium and magnesium minerals are present, this is called hard water. Hard water is a common water quality problem that homeowners can run into. Hard water not only causes water to taste bitter and salty but can leave unsightly stains inside sinks and toilets as well as cause costly damage to your hot water-using appliances. Plus, it can also impact the health and appearance of your skin and hair. Hard minerals can build up in your pipes and decrease your water pressure significantly. If you have started to notice any signs of hard water, it’s time to invest in a water softener.

What kinds of contaminants does having a water softener reduce?

Water softeners remove calcium and magnesium minerals from water. A water softener system will quickly eliminate the presence of scale. To determine how hard your water is, we recommend reaching out to your local water treatment facility or purchasing a water test kit.

How do I know which water softener is right for me?

When it comes to finding the best water softeners for home, there are multiple factors you should consider:

Type

There are two main types of water softeners. Salt-based and salt-free which are also known as water conditioners.

Salt-based water softeners use ion exchange to help reduce minerals in the water using something called resin. Resin is what is known as a sodium ion which has a negative charge. Calcium and magnesium minerals have a positive charge, so when hard water is passed through the resin, they grab onto the mineral ions and remove them from the water. Because of this process, water softeners require regular cleaning to maintain their effectiveness.

If you’re looking for a salt-free water softener which is a water softener that doesn’t use sodium, you are looking for a water conditioner. Water conditioners use potassium chloride instead of sodium to draw magnesium and potassium out of hard water. The only drawback is the expense.

Use

Depending on your home’s water use, you’ll want to make sure that you invest in a water softener system that meets your needs. A whole-house water softener will provide improved water quality at every point of entry in your house. If you are looking for a more targeted solution, you may want to explore different options.

Size

To determine the appropriate water softener size, multiply the number of people in your home by the gallons of water they use each day. The average person uses about 80 gallons of water per day. The capacity of a water softener is determined by the number of grains of water hardness that the unit can remove before it requires maintenance which is also known as regeneration.

Another thing to consider is if you need a single-tank or dual-tank water softener which also uses resin. The benefit of having a twin-tank water softener is that it can be available 24 hours a day. These models are more expensive and larger.

Maintenance

Water softeners require regular maintenance to maintain their effectiveness. You’ll want to make sure that you choose a solution that makes the most sense for your specific needs. We are proud to offer a wide variety of solutions including systems, water softening filters, and replacement water-softening cartridges.
